Chapter 5 - The Photograph

The photograph was taken eight days before attack.
Violet walking toward school parking lot.
Backpack on one shoulder.
Face turned away.
Printed on ordinary paper.
On back:
H turns 16 Saturday.
H.
Harper.
Or Harrier.
Federal Agent Lila Morgan would not speculate.
Neither would I.
Then another item from Mason’s abandoned vehicle.
A printed copy of my travel itinerary.
Not exact.
Enough.
Arrival Sunday.
He believed house would be fatherless until after birthday.
Someone had accessed my employer’s travel portal?
No.
The itinerary had been reconstructed from public flight reservation email compromised? Investigators traced it later to my personal email, logged in through session token from home tablet.
When?
A month earlier.
How?
Violet had clicked a fake school fundraising link? No blame. Could be phishing email to me. Better: Mason’s company still had administrator access to our home network/security hub and could see device names, not email. But accessing email from security vendor is too cyber technical. Maybe Mason had texted Violet pretending to help with birthday and asked when Dad returns. She casually said Sunday. This is simplest.
Violet remembered:
Two weeks earlier Mason replied to her birthday post:
Wish I could drop something off. Your dad around?
She wrote:
No, he’s away until Sunday.
There.
No hack.
Predators use trust more than sophistication.
Then why printed itinerary?
Mason had a note from Violet, not actual itinerary. Let's say the paper was a calendar printout of my known travel dates assembled from social posts and texts. Fine.
Then Agent Morgan said:
“Kestrel archive Lucas left contains a note.”
What?
If Mason comes looking for the original drive, Ethan Harper may still have the copy I gave him before review.
Lucas believed I kept.
“I didn't.”
“Could someone else?”
I remembered Rachel.
Five years ago, when Lucas handed me drive, I worked at dining table.
Rachel was sick but still alive? Timeline: Rachel died 7 years ago. Kestrel 5 years ago means after her death. So no.
I copied drive to encrypted laptop, sent to investigator, returned original by courier to Lucas. Courier receipt?
Maybe.
Then Lucas later claimed original missing.
What?
Agent Morgan:
“His archive says he never got it back.”
I stared.
“I sent.”
“To address?”
Sentinel office.
Oh.
It may have been intercepted.
Mason perhaps thought I retained because he never saw package? Wait if Mason intercepted, he'd have original. So no.
Maybe package was returned undeliverable and stored? I need a twist. Could be the "drive" Mason seeks isn't old drive itself but Kestrel master key, a second encrypted key Lucas told him Ethan had. Hmm.
Simpler: Lucas gave me two identical drives unknowingly? No.
Maybe Lucas wrote that Ethan kept a printed checksum page? Too technical.
Let's not overcomplicate. Mason mistakenly believes I retained original because Lucas told him so years ago under pressure to protect himself. Lucas lied to Mason. Thus Mason searched my house. Later Lucas's archive says: "I told Mason Ethan kept Kestrel because I was afraid. Ethan returned it. I destroyed original after federal copy verified." This clears.
Agent Morgan reads that note later. Great.
So Mason’s attack based on lie Lucas told to survive workplace pressure.
Then why recent? Lucas died, archive due release, Mason learned through lawyer that Kestrel evidence resurfacing and thought original could corroborate.
Then Violet improved.
She remembered more.
“Mason wasn’t alone.”
“Voice?”
“He called him Gavin once.”
Great.
Gavin Rhodes confirmed.
She heard:
Gavin:
We have five minutes.
Mason:
Check the office.
So Gavin entered house too?
Maybe he stayed at door. If so attack plural. But prompt unknown male attacker only; okay to introduce second.
Violet said she only saw Mason clearly.
After first blow, she heard Gavin say:
“What the hell did you do?”
Mason:
“She grabbed me.”
Then Gavin:
“Leave her. We go.”
Interesting.
Gavin did not assault? Could still aid burglary and flee.
Then Gavin turned himself in after 36 hours with lawyer.
Mason remained missing.
Gavin’s proffer:
Mason told him they were retrieving company property Ethan had stolen.
He believed Ethan not home.
He knew using maintenance code without authorization was unlawful but thought it was “civil dispute.”
He came.
Violet opened door voluntarily before they used key.
So why alarm disabled?
Gavin remotely put system into maintenance through Sentinel admin credential before arrival.
That is crime.
Then Mason searched.
Violet challenged.
Gavin claims he was in study when he heard crash.
He saw Mason hit Violet.
Told stop.
Then fled.
He did not call 911.
Why?
Mason said Aaron would handle.
Gavin feared.
Then he drove Mason south.
Dropped near motel.
Took SUV elsewhere.
Turned self in after seeing news.
Could be self-serving.
But footage, phone, logs support.
He gave location where he dropped Mason.
Police missed by hours.
Then Gavin said:
“Mason had a second plan.”
“What?”
“If Ethan came home unexpectedly, use Violet to force him to give Kestrel.”
I went cold.
So the photograph mattered.
He had prepared leverage.
Then Agent Morgan told me:
“We have officers around hospital and your residence.”
I nodded.
“You are not going looking.”
“I know.”
She studied.
“You mean it?”
“Yes.”
Because Mason knew me.
He knew Harrier.
He expected rage to pull me away from Violet and into a hunt.
Maybe he wanted me to make mistake.
I would not give.
Then my employer placed me on leave.
Good.
No fieldwork.
I moved with Violet temporarily to secure location after discharge.
Not secret bunker.
A federal victim support apartment with controlled access.
She hated.
“I’m not witness protection.”
“No.”
“Feels like.”
“I know.”
Then she asked:
“Did Uncle Mason always hate you?”
Uncle.
She still called him.
“No.”
“Did he love me?”
I swallowed.
“I think he did.”
“Then why?”
“Because when someone treats loyalty like ownership, they can decide your safety matters less than what they want.”
She looked away.
Then:
“I don't want him dead.”
“Neither do I.”
She looked surprised.
“You’re lying.”
“No.”
“Dad.”
“I want him found, stopped, tried, and unable to touch you again.”
Then:
“That is different.”
She studied.
“Would old Ranger you say that?”
“Old Ranger me worked under rules too.”
She smiled faintly.
Then Agent Morgan called.
Mason had used cash at a motel outside Roanoke.
Camera caught.
He was alone.
Police were moving.
I stayed beside Violet.
Two hours later, Morgan called again.
“He’s gone.”
My jaw tightened.
Then:
“But he left something addressed to you.”
A black Ranger ring.
And a note.
May you like
One sentence:
YOU SHOULD HAVE KEPT YOUR MOUTH SHUT FIVE YEARS AGO.
