Chapter 4

Victoria slowly sat down.
The confidence she had carried all evening was gone.
She looked at Claire.
"I owe you an apology."
Claire remained standing.
"So does everyone else."
Victoria nodded.
"You're right."
She looked around the table.
"For years..."
"I convinced myself Madison needed me more."
"I kept making excuses."
"I thought Claire was strong enough to handle disappointment."
Her voice broke.
"I never stopped to wonder who made her that strong."
Madison quietly wiped away tears.
She stood and walked toward her sister.
"I'm sorry."
"I spent my whole life accepting things I never earned."

Claire studied her face.
For once...
She believed her.
Richard reached into his wallet.
He removed his credit card and handed it to the restaurant manager.
"I'll pay tonight."
Daniel accepted it with a respectful nod.
As the bill was processed...
Claire picked up her coat.
Victoria hurried toward her.
"Will you come home with us?"
Claire smiled softly.
"Not tonight."
"I think we all have a lot to think about."
She walked toward the door.
Then stopped.
Without looking back, she said,
"I never wanted to be the favorite."
"I just wanted to be someone's daughter."
Those words echoed through the silent dining room.
After she left...
No one reached for another glass of champagne.
No one touched dessert.
The celebration was over.
Not because of the bill.
Because the truth had finally been served.
Outside...
Claire stepped into the cool evening air.
For the first time in years...
She felt lighter.
Sometimes the greatest act of love isn't continuing to carry the people who hurt you.
Sometimes...
It's finally putting the weight down.
May you like
And walking away with your dignity still intact.
