Chapter 2

No one moved.
Madison stared at the black leather bill folder as though it might disappear.
Then she laughed nervously.
"Very funny."
She pushed the folder back across the table.
"It belongs to you."
Claire didn't touch it.
"It belongs to whoever invited everyone."
Victoria's smile faded.
"Claire."
"Don't embarrass the family."
Claire looked at her mother.
"I've been protecting this family's image for fifteen years."
"I think someone else can take a turn."
An uncomfortable silence settled over the room.
Richard finally spoke.
"Claire..."
"It's only one dinner."

Claire smiled sadly.
"That's exactly what you said last Christmas."
"And Grandma's birthday."
"And Madison's engagement party."
"And Dad's retirement dinner."
She looked around the table.
"Do any of you remember the last family event I didn't pay for?"
No one answered.
Because no one could.
Madison crossed her arms.
"You own a successful company."
"You can afford it."
Claire nodded.
"I can."
"That doesn't mean I should."
Victoria sighed dramatically.
"I raised you to put family first."
Claire's eyes softened.
"No."
"You raised me to clean up everyone else's mess."
The words landed like a hammer.
Several relatives quietly looked down at their plates.
Deep inside...
They knew she wasn't wrong.
Just then...
The restaurant manager walked into the private dining room.
He smiled warmly the moment he saw Claire.
"Ms. Bennett."
"Good evening."
Claire smiled politely.
"Good evening, Daniel."
Victoria looked confused.
"You know each other?"
The manager nodded.
"Of course."
"Ms. Bennett has hosted several charity galas here."
"She's one of our most valued clients."
Madison forced a smile.
"Perfect."
"Then you can just add tonight to her account."
The manager didn't move.
Instead...
He looked at Claire.
"Would you like me to do that?"
Claire calmly shook her head.
"No."
"The reservation wasn't made under my name."
Daniel checked the reservation tablet.
A moment later...
He looked up.
"That's correct."
"This evening's private dining room was reserved by Mrs. Victoria Bennett."
He closed the tablet.
"Therefore..."
"The bill belongs to Mrs. Bennett."
Victoria's face turned pale.
Madison looked at her mother in disbelief.
"You told me Claire always handled these things."
Victoria opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Claire quietly picked up her handbag.
She wasn't angry.
She was simply finished.
As she turned toward the door...
Victoria suddenly stood.
"Claire..."
"Please."
"Don't leave like this."
Claire stopped.
But she didn't turn around.
For the first time...

Her mother sounded less embarrassed...
And more afraid.
