Chapter 1

The private dining room glittered beneath crystal chandeliers.
Soft piano music drifted through the upscale restaurant.
Champagne flowed freely.
White roses decorated the center of the table.
It looked like the perfect family celebration.
For everyone...
Except Claire Bennett.
She sat quietly at the far end of the table in an elegant black dress, listening as relatives laughed around her.
Across from her, Madison smiled as though she owned the room.
She had always known how to command attention.
She had also always known she was their mother's favorite.
Victoria Bennett stood and gently tapped her champagne glass.
The room fell silent.
She smiled proudly at Madison.
"I'd like to make a toast."
Everyone lifted their glasses.
Victoria looked at her younger daughter with unmistakable pride.
"To Madison..."
"My beautiful daughter."
"My greatest joy."
Then she laughed softly.
"And the daughter I'm proud of."
The room erupted into applause.
Madison beamed.
She reached over and hugged her mother while relatives cheered.
Claire remained perfectly still.
She smiled politely.
But inside...
Something quietly broke.
It wasn't the first time.
Growing up...
Madison received the expensive birthday parties.
Claire received practical gifts.
Madison's college tuition was paid without question.
Claire worked nights to earn her own degree.
When Madison crashed her third car...
Their parents bought her another one.
When Claire started her own business...
No one even asked what it was called.
Over the years...
Claire stopped expecting fairness.
She simply learned to stop hoping.
The waiter approached the table carrying a black leather bill folder.
Without hesitation...
He placed it directly in front of Claire.
Victoria smiled warmly.
"There you are."
Claire looked down at the folder.
Then back at her mother.
Victoria spoke as though it were the most natural thing in the world.
"Claire..."
"You've always been the responsible one."
Madison leaned back with a satisfied grin.
One cousin whispered,
"Of course Claire's paying."
Another laughed.
"She always does."
Claire slowly opened the folder.
The total covered the entire evening.
Private dining room.
Premium wine.
Champagne.
Desserts.
Nearly twelve thousand dollars.
No one asked whether she wanted to pay.
They had already decided.
Just like every family gathering before.
Claire quietly closed the folder.
She stood.
Every conversation stopped.
Without the slightest trace of anger...
She gently slid the leather folder across the polished table.
It stopped directly in front of Madison.
Claire finally spoke.
"Wrong daughter."
The smile vanished from Madison's face.
Victoria blinked in disbelief.
Richard slowly looked up from his glass.
The room became completely silent.
No one had ever seen Claire say no.
Until tonight.
And for the first time in years...
May you like
The Bennett family realized they had mistaken her kindness...
For obligation.
