Chapter 3

Claire slowly turned back toward the table.

Her eyes settled on her father.

Richard had barely spoken all evening.

Just as he had barely spoken for most of her life.

He looked exhausted.

Older than she remembered.

He slowly stood.

Then, to everyone's surprise...

He walked to the center of the room.

"I need to say something."

Victoria frowned.

"Richard..."

He gently raised a hand.

"Please."

"I should have said this years ago."

The room fell silent.

Richard looked at Claire.

"When you started your business..."

"I secretly mortgaged one of my properties because I was afraid you'd fail."

Claire looked surprised.

"I never told you."

"You never needed the money."

"You succeeded on your own."

He smiled sadly.

"And I was proud."

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

Richard continued.

"But I never told you that."

"I stayed quiet."

"Every time your mother favored Madison..."

"I stayed quiet."

"Every time you paid another family bill..."

"I stayed quiet."

He looked down.

"I thought keeping the peace made me a good husband."

"It made me a terrible father."

Victoria stared at him.

"You think this is all my fault?"

Richard shook his head.

"No."

"It's mine too."

"I watched one daughter carry this family..."

"While the other was taught the world owed her everything."

Madison's confident expression disappeared.

She suddenly remembered something.

"Wait..."

She looked at Claire.

"The beach house..."

"The renovations..."

"The hospital donation for Grandma..."

Claire quietly nodded.

"I paid for all of them."

Madison's face went white.

"I thought Mom did."

Claire smiled gently.

"So did everyone else."

The room became painfully quiet.

One of the older relatives whispered,

"My God..."

Another slowly lowered his champagne glass.

For years...

They had praised the wrong person.

Victoria looked at Claire with tears in her eyes.

"Why didn't you ever tell anyone?"

Claire answered honestly.

"Because I wasn't doing it for recognition."

"I was doing it because I loved my family."

She paused.

"But love without respect eventually becomes exhaustion."

No one could argue with her.

Because everyone at the table had just realized...

May you like

Claire had never been the least successful daughter.

She had been the strongest one all along.
