Chapter 23 - What My Father Actually Left Me

People assume inheritance stories are about money.

Mine was about permission.

Dad left roughly six million dollars in a trust over time.

A house.

A watch.

A recipe book.

A blue tie.

A scholarship bequest.

And one lesson I had spent fifty years avoiding.

Love does not transfer ownership.

Mark loved me.

I believe that.

Diane loved Mark.

Melissa loved Diane.

Everyone in that chain used love to justify decisions for somebody else.

Dad saw it.

He had done versions himself.

That was why his letter mattered.

He did not tell me:

Mark is evil.

Leave him.

Protect my money.

He told me:

May you like

Decide.

That was the inheritance beneath inheritance.
