Chapter 22 - The One Thing I Bought

Five years after Dad died, I bought something extravagant.
A lake cabin.
Small.
Two bedrooms.
Not a mansion.
Not investment.
I had wanted one since childhood.
I used a trust approved principal distribution after discussing long term plan with Samuel Grant.
He approved because trust allowed housing and lifestyle support consistent with resources.
No guilt.
That mattered.
I called Mark from porch after closing.
Why?
Because he once knew me better than anyone.
“I bought a lake place.”
He laughed.
“Walter would hate maintenance.”
“Yes.”
“You happy?”
“Yes.”
“Then good.”
No ask:
How much?
No:
Who owns?
No:
Can Diane use?
Just good.
I hung up and cried.
The thing I bought was not cabin.
It was choice without committee.
I invited friends.
Diane once, separately.
Melissa once.
Mark never.
