Chapter 21 - Melissa’s Fifty Dollars

Melissa paid Mark fifty dollars a week for years.

Then hundred.

Then two hundred.

Not because bankruptcy required every informal family debt.

Because she wanted to.

One day she told me:

“I’ll never repay everything.”

“Then why?”

“Because I need to stop being the person who waits for someone to rescue me.”

That was growth.

She apologized to Diane too.

For the guarantee.

For hiding full debt.

Diane forgave.

Mark forgave.

I did not need to.

Melissa and I became cordial.

Not sisters.

We had never been sisters emotionally, despite twenty two years of marriage.

That was okay.

She asked once:

“Do you think Walter hated me?”

“No.”

“Really?”

“He barely knew you.”

She laughed.

“That’s somehow worse.”

“Dad didn’t spend much time thinking about other people’s financial chaos.”

“Smart man.”

“Yes.”

We toasted with iced tea.

No inheritance conversation.
