Chapter 20 - Mark’s New Life

Mark eventually became vice president of operations at a mid sized distribution company.

Not as prestigious as Horizon.

More stable.

He liked boss.

Paid debt.

Northstar balance fell.

Then disappeared after five years.

He sent me a photo of final statement.

PAID IN FULL.

I replied:

Congratulations.

Nothing more.

He repaid Dad’s note one year early.

Midwest Fiduciary deposited into trust.

Melissa finished bankruptcy, rebuilt credit, and became district manager for a gym chain.

She never opened another business.

“I like somebody else worrying about rent,” she told me at Diane’s seventy seventh birthday.

Fair.

Diane stayed in apartment.

Her plants took over balcony.

She once joked:

“This is my ranch.”

We laughed.

Family gatherings became possible again because inheritance stopped being silent fourth person.

No one asked numbers.

No one hinted.

That was rule.

Mark dated.

Eventually remarried a woman named Janet Cole, a school administrator.

He told me before Diane did.

“I don’t want you hearing from family.”

“That’s considerate.”

“Learned late.”

“Yes.”

He laughed.

Janet and I met once at Diane’s birthday.

She seemed kind.

I felt no jealousy.

That surprised me.

The divorce had stopped hurting like injury.

It had become history.

Mark never received any portion of Dad’s trust.

He did receive his fair share of our marital life.

Retirement.

House proceeds.

Furniture.

Memories.

Twenty two years were not erased because inheritance was separate.

That distinction mattered.
