Chapter 7 - THE MONEY BENEATH SOPHIE’S NAME
Sophie’s trust had been created by Evelyn’s father.
Twenty million dollars.
Protected until Sophie turned twenty five.
The principal could be used only for education, health, and essential welfare.
Julian served as cotrustee.
Evelyn discovered eleven withdrawals she had never approved.
Each transfer carried her electronic signature.
The money moved through educational consulting companies, private medical services, and security expenses.
None benefited Sophie.
One company belonged to Dr. Reed.
Another was controlled by Victoria’s former driver.
A third transferred funds directly into a holding company that supported Julian’s merger guarantee.
More than nine million dollars had disappeared.
Evelyn stared at the statements inside Helen’s office.
“They stole from their own child.”
Helen corrected her gently.
“They stole from your child. Julian treated the trust as family money.”
Evelyn looked toward the window.
“He planned to gain full guardianship so he could authorize the rest.”
“Yes.”
The missing bracelet allegation would establish dishonesty.
The psychiatric commitment would remove Evelyn.
The custody order would place Sophie under Julian’s control.
The merger transfer would secure Evelyn’s shares.
One public humiliation connected every objective.
Evelyn contacted Detective Moore.
Financial subpoenas followed.
The Blackwood family attempted to block them.
They failed.
Claire provided emails showing Victoria selecting Sophie’s trust because auditors rarely questioned expenses labeled child security.
Dr. Reed invoiced hundreds of thousands for evaluations that never occurred.
Julian approved them.
The money funded private aircraft, campaign donations, and debt payments.
Victoria’s cold treatment of Sophie had never been simple dislike.
The child represented an account she considered available.
During Evelyn’s supervised visit, Sophie sat across from her at Rachel’s kitchen table.
“Are you still my mommy?”
Evelyn’s heart broke.
“Always.”
“Why can’t I sleep with you?”
“Because adults are checking that everything is safe.”
“Daddy said that too.”
“I know.”
“How do I know who tells the truth?”
Evelyn resisted the urge to say because I am your mother.
That was the kind of answer Julian gave.
“You look at what people do. You ask questions. You speak to more than one safe adult.”
“Can safe adults lie?”
“Yes.”
“Can mommies?”
“Yes.”
Sophie studied her.
“Did you lie?”
“I told you Daddy was busy when I knew he was choosing not to come home.”
“Why?”
“I wanted to protect your feelings.”
“Did it?”
“No.”
The child nodded.
“I like true things, even when they are bad.”
“So do I.”
The supervised visits expanded after investigators confirmed Evelyn did not voluntarily take the sedative and the complete footage supported self defense.
Sophie returned to her care under a temporary protective order.
Julian received no direct contact while the investigation continued.
He sent gifts.
Evelyn returned them unopened.
He sent letters through attorneys.
She preserved them.
One letter said:
You are destroying Sophie’s relationship with her father because you hate me.
Evelyn answered through counsel:
Sophie’s relationship with you will be determined by your conduct, the court, and her safety. It will not be repaired through gifts or accusations.
On Monday morning, the merger vote failed.
Evelyn appeared by secure video.
Julian attempted to vote her shares using the forged proxy.
Helen challenged it.
The board rejected his authority.
Without the merger, creditors demanded repayment.
Blackwood Holdings lost access to emergency financing.
The public company’s stock fell.
Victoria blamed Evelyn in front of reporters.
Evelyn released no statement.
The financial records spoke more effectively.
That evening, Julian arrived outside Evelyn’s secure apartment despite the protective order.
He did not knock.
He stood across the street beside a black car.
Sophie saw him through the window.
“Daddy is here.”
Evelyn called security.
Julian lifted his phone and sent one message.
I need to speak to you before my mother does something irreversible.
Five minutes later, a second message appeared.
She has the original trust records.
