Chapter 3 - THE PLACE WHERE SICK MOTHERS GO

Helen Carter requested a private room.
Evelyn refused.
“No.”
Julian stared at her.
“You want to discuss our daughter’s confusion in front of four hundred people?”
“I want everything preserved.”
“This is becoming a spectacle.”
“You created the spectacle.”
Sophie stood against Evelyn’s side, still crying quietly.
The ballroom guests remained in small clusters. Nobody danced. Nobody lifted another drink.
Politicians who had spent years smiling beside the Blackwoods now avoided the family.
Marcus locked the ballroom doors until police arrived, not to imprison guests, but to prevent evidence from disappearing.
Victoria whispered to Julian.
Evelyn could not hear every word.
She heard enough.
Documents.
Handbag.
Destroy them.
Evelyn looked toward the head table.
Victoria’s black designer handbag rested beside her chair.
Julian noticed where Evelyn was looking.
He moved first.
Evelyn caught his sleeve.
“Do not touch that bag.”
He jerked free.
“It belongs to my mother.”
Helen stepped between him and the table.
“Then she should have no objection to preserving it.”
Victoria laughed coldly.
“You have no authority to search my belongings.”
“No one is searching anything,” Helen said. “We are preventing removal until police determine whether it relates to the staged theft.”
Claire spoke from beside a security guard.
“The papers are inside.”
Victoria’s head turned slowly.
Claire looked terrified, but continued.
“The commitment documents.”
Julian’s face lost color.
Evelyn felt the blood leave her hands.
“What commitment documents?”
Claire stared toward the floor.
“They were going to say you had a breakdown tonight.”
Victoria raised her voice.
“This woman is lying to avoid prosecution.”
Claire laughed once through tears.
“You dictated the statement.”
“Enough.”
“You told me Julian needed emergency guardianship of Sophie and control of Evelyn’s shares before Monday.”
The ballroom erupted into whispers.
Evelyn looked toward Julian.
“What happens Monday?”
He remained silent.
Helen answered.
“The Blackwood Meridian merger closes Monday morning.”
Evelyn inherited twenty eight percent of Meridian Systems from her father.
Julian needed her voting rights to approve the merger.
She had refused after discovering unexplained transfers through the Blackwood Foundation.
Three months earlier, he persuaded her to sign a temporary proxy while claiming it applied only to routine board matters.
Her attorney later found that the document had been altered.
Evelyn revoked it.
Without her vote, the merger could fail.
Unless she was declared incapacitated.
Unless Julian became her legal guardian.
Unless he also obtained control over Sophie’s trust.
Victoria’s handbag was placed inside a clear security container.
When police arrived, an officer opened it while wearing gloves.
Inside was a thick envelope.
The first document was a petition for emergency psychiatric evaluation.
The second was a statement claiming Evelyn had attacked Julian without provocation, threatened Victoria, and involved Sophie in paranoid accusations.
The third requested temporary guardianship of the child.
A fourth document transferred Evelyn’s voting authority to Julian during treatment.
Her signature appeared on the final page.
She had never signed it.
Helen studied the mark.
“It was copied from the marital trust amendment.”
Julian looked toward the officers.
“My wife has been emotionally unstable for months.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“Name one physician who diagnosed me.”
“You refused treatment.”
“I refused the doctor your mother selected.”
“He is respected.”
“He is a foundation donor.”
Victoria stepped forward.
“This public violence proves our concern.”
Evelyn pointed toward the overhead camera.
“It proves Julian grabbed me twice and prevented me from leaving.”
“You kicked your husband onto the floor.”
“Yes.”
The simplicity of her answer unsettled them.
She did not deny what everyone had seen.
She refused to let them erase what happened first.
An officer asked Evelyn whether she wanted to make a formal complaint.
“Yes.”
Julian’s composure cracked.
“You will destroy this family over one argument?”
“One argument did not forge my signature.”
Victoria touched his arm.
He pulled away.
For the first time, she looked at her son as though he had failed her.
Evelyn turned toward Sophie.
“Sweetheart, when did Daddy tell you I was going away?”
The child looked at Julian.
He forced a gentle smile.
“Sophie, you misunderstood.”
Evelyn stepped between them.
“Look at me.”
Sophie’s eyes returned to her mother.
“Yesterday.”
“What exactly did he say?”
“He said Grandma found a doctor who helps angry women sleep for a long time.”
Evelyn’s stomach turned.
“Did he tell you where you would live?”
“With Daddy and Grandma.”
“Did he tell you when?”
“After the party.”
Julian took a sharp breath.
Victoria’s fingers tightened around her empty wrist.
The accusation, the staged theft, and the public confrontation were not pieces of a future plan.

They expected Evelyn to disappear that night.
