Chapter 4 - THE DOCTOR WHO CAME TOO QUICKLY

Dr. Malcolm Reed arrived before the police finished interviewing the first witness.
He entered the ballroom carrying a leather medical case and wearing a dark overcoat over formal clothes.
Evelyn had met him twice.
Both times at Blackwood Foundation dinners.
He had never examined her.
Yet he approached the officers as if called to treat a patient.
“I am the family physician.”
Helen’s eyes narrowed.
“Who contacted you?”
“Julian.”
Evelyn looked toward her husband.
His phone remained in police custody.
“When?”
“Earlier this evening.”
Dr. Reed’s answer came too quickly.
He corrected himself.
“Mrs. Blackwood contacted me.”
Victoria lifted her chin.
“I was worried about Evelyn’s behavior.”
“Before the bracelet disappeared?” Helen asked.
Victoria did not answer.
Dr. Reed looked toward Evelyn with rehearsed sympathy.
“I understand you experienced an episode.”
“I defended myself.”
“People in distress often interpret intervention as attack.”
“You have never treated me.”
“I reviewed information supplied by your family.”
“That is not treatment.”
His smile tightened.
“My only concern is safety.”
Sophie moved behind Evelyn.
The child’s entire body stiffened.
Evelyn felt it.
“What is wrong?”
Sophie pointed toward Dr. Reed.
“That man came into your bedroom.”
The doctor’s expression changed.
Only briefly.
Julian spoke sharply.
“She is exhausted.”
Evelyn crouched.
“When did he come into my room?”
“Tuesday night.”
Evelyn remembered Tuesday.
She had fallen asleep unusually early after drinking tea Victoria brought to her study.
The following morning, her head hurt and several documents had been moved from the desk.
Julian said the housekeeper cleaned.
“What did you see?” Evelyn asked.
Sophie’s voice became small.
“Daddy carried you.”
A shiver moved across Evelyn’s skin.
“Where?”
“To the bed.”
“What did the doctor do?”
“He put something in your arm.”
Dr. Reed stepped forward.
“This questioning is inappropriate.”
An officer blocked him.
“Remain where you are.”
Sophie continued.
“Daddy said the camera had to show you sleeping.”
Julian’s face became bloodless.
“What camera?” Evelyn asked.
“The little one behind the flowers.”
The master bedroom contained a flower arrangement beside the dresser.
Evelyn looked toward Helen.
“Call the house security team.”
Julian tried to leave.
Marcus and an officer stopped him.
“You cannot hold me here.”
“You are not under arrest,” the officer said. “You are also not entering an active evidence area.”
Dr. Reed placed his medical case on a chair.
Evelyn watched him.
“Open it.”
He laughed nervously.
“You have no authority.”
The officer asked whether the case contained controlled medication.
Dr. Reed refused consent to a search.
The officer preserved the case pending a warrant.
His refusal did not prove a crime.
His arrival, the prepared paperwork, and Sophie’s statement created enough concern for further investigation.
Evelyn remembered the tea.
She remembered waking with a small bruise inside her elbow.
She had assumed it came from bumping the desk.
Julian had spent Wednesday telling her she seemed forgetful.
He suggested she cancel the gala.
She refused.
That had been part of the plan.
They intended to present footage of her unconscious or disoriented inside her bedroom as evidence of instability.
Then create a public incident.
Then have Dr. Reed recommend emergency psychiatric detention.
The false documents would complete the transfer.
A detective named Rachel Moore arrived from the financial crimes unit after Helen explained the merger.
She listened without reacting.
“Mrs. Blackwood, do you have independent legal representation?”
“Yes.”
“Has your attorney preserved the altered proxy?”
“Yes.”
“Do you control any security systems at your home?”
“Julian controls the main account. I installed a separate nursery camera after Sophie began having nightmares.”
Julian looked toward her.
“You never told me.”
“That was the purpose.”
The camera covered the hallway outside Sophie’s bedroom.
It might have recorded Dr. Reed entering.
Evelyn accessed the encrypted account from Helen’s phone.
The video showed Julian walking toward the master suite at 11:42 p.m. Tuesday.
Dr. Reed followed carrying the same leather case.
At 12:16 a.m., they emerged.
Julian held a small camera.
Dr. Reed carried an empty injection wrapper.
The video did not reveal what medication, if any, had been administered.
It proved they lied about being there.
Dr. Reed sat down.
Victoria whispered:
“This can still be explained.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“Then explain it.”
No one did.
The detective asked Evelyn whether she would consent to immediate medical testing.
“Yes.”
Julian shouted:
“She has been drinking champagne all evening.”
Evelyn had not consumed alcohol.
He knew that.
She looked toward Detective Moore.

“Test everything.”
Continue to the next part: Evelyn’s blood test reveals a sedative she was never prescribed, while ballroom footage shows Julian secretly placing the drug into her drink before accusing her daughter.
