Chapter 6 - THE VIDEO WITHOUT THE FIRST EIGHT SECONDS
At 6:12 the next morning, Evelyn received notice of an emergency custody hearing.
Julian moved quickly.
His attorneys submitted a short video showing Evelyn kicking him in the ballroom.
The clip began after Sophie moved toward Helen.
It excluded Julian grabbing Evelyn’s arm.
It excluded his threat.
It excluded Victoria’s accusation and Claire’s staged theft.
The petition described Evelyn as violent, paranoid, and under the influence of unprescribed medication.
It requested immediate temporary custody of Sophie.
Evelyn read the filing twice.
“They drugged me, then used the drug as evidence that I was unstable.”
Helen nodded.
“They also submitted Dr. Reed’s declaration.”
“He is under investigation.”
“Not arrested.”
The declaration claimed Evelyn had a history of rage, delusional suspicion, and medication refusal.
No medical records supported it.
The emergency judge assigned to the hearing was Charles Brennan.
He had attended the gala.
He appeared in photographs beside Victoria at three foundation events.
Helen filed a motion requesting reassignment.
It was denied before the hearing began.
Evelyn entered court wearing a plain navy dress.
No jewelry.
No dramatic makeup.
Sophie remained with an approved caregiver and child advocate.
Julian arrived in a neck brace.
The ballroom footage showed no neck injury.
He wore it for the cameras outside.
Victoria walked beside him, holding his arm as if he had survived an assassination attempt.
Inside the courtroom, Julian’s attorney played the edited clip.
Evelyn’s kick looked sudden and brutal without the preceding moments.
Judge Brennan looked toward her.
“Did you strike your husband?”
“I defended myself after he grabbed me twice and blocked my access to my daughter.”
“Your response appears disproportionate.”
“You have not seen the complete recording.”
Julian’s attorney stood.
“We have provided the relevant incident.”
Helen rose.
“You provided a manipulated excerpt.”
She submitted footage from the independent hotel archive.
The full video began with Sophie crying.
It showed Julian seize Evelyn’s arm.
It captured her warning.
Release me.
It showed him grab her again.
Then the kick.
Judge Brennan watched without expression.
Helen submitted the coatroom footage next.
Claire planting the bracelet.
Then the hallway footage of Dr. Reed entering Evelyn’s bedroom.
Then the preliminary toxicology report.
Julian’s neck brace suddenly looked theatrical.
His attorney argued none of it changed the fact that Evelyn used force in front of a child.
Helen answered:
“The child was already being used as the central victim in a fabricated theft designed to provoke her mother.”
Judge Brennan ordered a private interview with Sophie through a court specialist.
The child described what Julian told her before the gala.
“Daddy said Mommy was sick.”
“How did he say she was sick?”
“He said she thinks people are trying to hurt her.”
“Do you think people were trying to hurt her?”
Sophie looked confused.
“They put medicine in her drink.”
“What did you understand would happen after the party?”
“I would live with Daddy and Grandma.”
“How did that make you feel?”
“I wanted Mommy.”
“Did you tell Daddy?”
“Yes.”
“What did he say?”
“That I would understand when I was older.”
“Are you afraid of either parent?”
Sophie became quiet.
“Daddy smiles when other people are looking.”
The specialist waited.
“What happens when they are not?”
“He squeezes.”
“Who?”
“Mommy’s arm. Sometimes mine.”
The courtroom became still when the statement was summarized.
Julian denied ever harming Sophie.
No visible bruising had been documented before.
The court did not determine criminal guilt.
It considered immediate safety.
Judge Brennan denied Julian’s request for sole custody.
He also refused to return Sophie to either parent without temporary supervision, citing the public violence and ongoing investigation.
Sophie was placed with Evelyn’s older sister, Rachel Morgan, for seventy two hours while child services evaluated the situation.
Evelyn felt as though the floor disappeared beneath her.
“I protected her.”
The judge looked toward her.
“The court is not punishing you. It is preserving stability while facts are reviewed.”
“My daughter thinks I am being taken away.”
“You may have supervised contact.”
Julian’s expression almost smiled.
He had not won custody.
He had still separated them.
Outside the courtroom, Evelyn entered a private consultation room and finally cried.
Helen remained silent until the first wave passed.
Then she placed a file on the table.
“What is this?” Evelyn asked.
“The Blackwood Meridian merger documents.”
“I cannot think about the company.”
“You need to.”
Helen opened the file.
“If the merger fails by Monday, Julian loses access to a personal guarantee worth six hundred million dollars.”
Evelyn stared at her.
“This was not only about controlling my shares.”
“No.”
“He needed the merger to prevent his own bankruptcy.”
“Yes.”
“And Victoria?”
“She used the foundation endowment as collateral without board approval.”
The glamorous empire surrounding them was already collapsing.
