Chapter 9 - Daniel’s Other Marriage

Julia Mercer sent me no photographs.

I appreciated that.

I did not need see Rebecca to care.

But she told me enough.

Rebecca was thirty one when she married Daniel.

Accountant.

Funny.

Loved horses.

Hated cilantro.

The kind of details murder stories erase.

Daniel met her at a charity auction.

He worked in commercial leasing.

They married after eighteen months.

Three years later she inherited money after her father died.

Daniel started investment projects.

Debt followed.

Then control.

Passwords.

Questions.

Criticism.

Rebecca told Julia:

“He acts like my money is proof I don’t trust him.”

Then pregnancy.

She hoped child would help.

Instead Daniel became more controlling.

Same.

Then Dr. Hale.

Daniel introduced.

Same.

Then Rebecca discovered loan.

She planned divorce.

She changed estate lawyer.

Did not complete new documents before hospitalization.

Same.

Julia said:

“I told her to leave.”

She cried.

“She said after baby.”

Same.

I stopped breathing.

After baby.

That phrase lived in both our lives.

Rebecca died before.

I survived.

Not because I was smarter.

Because I saw tea.

Because I recorded.

Because board responded.

Because history happened to repeat with slightly different conditions.

I refused survivor superiority.

Then Daniel’s personal pattern.

Investigators found another serious relationship between Rebecca and me.

No death.

A woman named Laura Finch dated Daniel for eleven months after Rebecca died.

He borrowed $40,000.

She ended relationship when he pressured her to invest in development.

No violence reported.

She recovered part money through civil settlement.

Important.

Daniel was not a serial killer targeting every woman with money.

He was a financial predator whose violence escalated when major wealth and exposure intersected.

Rebecca.

Me.

Pattern specific.

Then Daniel’s relationship with Vanessa.

She had less money than me.

He did not target her wealth.

He used her for validation, sex, future family, and a narrative of new life.

He told her:

“Claire is cold.”

He told me:

“Vanessa is just consultant.”

He needed women separated by lies.

Then Vanessa’s pregnancy.

Paternity test after Eli? Not yet. Prenatal noninvasive maybe she agreed. It confirmed Daniel as biological father.

She planned to name baby Ethan Cole.

Good.

No Bennett.

She asked Daniel’s family? None relevant.

Then Daniel’s attorney tried to blame Hale.

“Doctor manipulated vulnerable husband.”

Notebook killed that.

Hale did not write:

Hale wants 500.

Daniel did.

Then attempted inheritance.

Rebecca Sloan found Daniel had downloaded my draft estate memo from company email.

It said:

After birth, Claire intends to transfer controlling Whitmore shares into descendant trust, with Rebecca Sloan and Commonwealth Fiduciary as co trustees until child age thirty.

Daniel knew.

If I survived childbirth and signed, he would never control those shares through marriage.

So he wanted me dead before.

But even then, his legal assumption flawed.

My current will named him executor and residual beneficiary, but Whitmore shareholder agreement required board approval for transfer and could force repurchase.

Grace, as after born child, would also have rights.

And slayer law.

He planned murder based on a fantasy of instant control.

Then board audit.

Northline Development Services total improper payments:

$436,000 including staged bribe funds.

Cole Strategy unsupported excess:

$172,000.

Other false vendors:

$219,000.

Total suspected diversion around $827,000.

Not twelve million.

Still major.

Some recovered from frozen accounts.

Insurance covered certain losses after investigation.

Daniel’s compensation clawback clause allowed Whitmore to recoup bonuses tied to fraudulent projects.

He owned no company shares.

He would not be “stripped of company.”

He never owned it.

Then one executive asked:

“Should Claire return now?”

Thomas Avery said:

“Claire just gave birth.”

Thank you.

I stayed away.

Company functioned.

That was governance.

Then I received Daniel’s first letter from jail.

Claire,

Hale is lying.

I stopped.

Then:

I never wanted you dead.

The recording contained his voice saying otherwise.

I handed to Rebecca Sloan.

No response.

Then another letter two weeks later:

Vanessa trapped me.

No.

Then another:

Think about Grace.

That one enraged.

He had called our daughter useful.

Now fatherhood as leverage.

My attorney obtained court order limiting direct jail correspondence.

No more.

Grace slept in bassinet.

I looked at her.

“Your father doesn’t get to use you as door.”

May you like

She yawned.

Excellent response.
