Chapter 7 - Vanessa Cole
Vanessa asked to see me.
I said no.
Then she asked again through her lawyer.
No.
Third request was different.
She offered full access to her business records before any immunity discussion.
That got prosecutor’s attention, not mine.
I did not need confront mistress.
I needed evidence.
Vanessa owned Cole Strategy Group.
Legitimate marketing consultancy.
She had worked for Whitmore two years.
Her actual services:
Brand strategy.
Tenant campaigns.
Events.
Rough market value around $140,000.
Whitmore paid $312,000.
What happened to excess?
Vanessa kept about $92,000 personally.
Another $80,000 went back to Daniel through transfers labeled shared investments.
She knew invoices were inflated.
She claimed Daniel said they were “discretionary relationship bonuses.”
She knew company had not approved.
That was financial fraud.
Not attempted murder.
Then affair.
Started fourteen months earlier.
Vanessa was now five months pregnant.
DNA later would confirm Daniel was biological father.
She had believed Daniel and I were “functionally separated.”
Ridiculous because she sat at my Christmas table.
But Daniel sent staged messages.
He showed her screenshots of supposed communications where I said marriage was over.
Those messages were fabricated from edited exports.
Vanessa admitted she eventually realized we were not separated.
She continued affair.
No innocence.
Then what did Daniel promise?
Marriage.
A house.
Equity in a new development company.
Security for their child.
He told her my inherited company was “effectively marital” and that after divorce he would receive at least half.
False.
Then, six weeks before hospital, he changed.
Became obsessed with my estate plan.
Asked Vanessa:
“If something happened to Claire before baby arrives, would you stay with me?”
Vanessa replied:
“What kind of question is that?”
He wrote:
Hypothetical.
She said:
Stop.
Then two weeks later:
Daniel:
Hale is back in town.
Vanessa:
Who?
Daniel:
Old doctor.
Vanessa later told detectives:
“I thought fertility or something.”
Then after arrest, she learned Hale had treated Rebecca.
She panicked.
Why?
Daniel once said when drunk:
“Rebecca’s doctor knew how to keep his mouth shut.”
At time Vanessa assumed about medical privacy.
Now different.
Then one message mattered.
Day before hospital:
Vanessa:
I don’t want to be reason Claire gets hurt.
Daniel:
You’re carrying future. Focus on that.
She replied:
I mean it.
Daniel:
I know.
Not proof she knew murder.
Proof she sensed danger.
Her lawyer negotiated.
Vanessa would likely face charges for false invoices and wire fraud.
She agreed to cooperate without asking murder immunity because prosecutors had no evidence she joined murder.
Then she gave investigators something new.
A storage key.
Daniel had rented a unit under company alias.
He once asked Vanessa to store boxes there because “Claire audits everything.”
She kept key.
Police obtained warrant.
Inside:
Old Rebecca financial records.
Insurance policy.
Copies of her medical records.
Daniel’s original agreement with Hale Medical Consulting.
And a black notebook.
Daniel’s handwriting.
Rebecca.
Claire.
Two sections.
Under Rebecca:
Debt.
Condo.
Policy.
Hale.
Then a date.
The date she died.
Under Claire:
Whitmore.
Will.
Baby.
Board.
Hale.
The words were not a confession.
But pattern.
Then one line:
If C signs after birth, locked out.
Which signature?
My descendant trust update.
He knew more than Rebecca Sloan thought.
Maybe he had accessed draft.
Then:
Hale wants 500.
There.
Written four days before hospital.
Premeditation.
Then another entry:
V says no violence.
V.
Vanessa.
She had objected.
That helped her.
Then:
Doesn’t need details.
That condemned Daniel.
Vanessa had sensed.
He deliberately kept her outside.
Then police found a sealed envelope labeled REBECCA.
Inside a photograph of Daniel and Rebecca.
A letter she had written him.
I did not read.
Julia Mercer received eventually.
Not mine.
Then Detective Cole said:
“The notebook changes the attempted murder case significantly.”
Premeditation.
Financial motive.
Hale.
And one phrase:
Same hospital. Easier.
I felt sick.
Daniel had chosen Dr. Hale and the hospital because he believed the past proved it could be done.
Then toxicology on Rebecca’s retained samples came back.
Detective did not tell me by phone.
She came in person.
The substance in Rebecca’s tissue matched the medication found in Hale’s syringe.
Not just same class.
