Chapter 3 - THE ACCOUNTS KHLOE REFUSED TO DIE FOR
Khloe opened her eyes the following afternoon.
Harrison sat beside the bed.
His suit had been replaced, but the blood marked jacket remained folded inside a sealed hospital bag.
“Grace,” Khloe whispered.
“Your daughter is alive.”
“Can I see her?”
“As soon as the doctors clear you.”
“Richard?”
“Outside the protected unit.”
Her eyes filled with fear.
“Do not let him near her.”
“I won’t.”
Harrison did not promise something outside his authority. He had already helped obtain an emergency protective order based on the courthouse attack, witness statements, and the ongoing investigation.
Richard could not contact Khloe directly.
Any attempt to see the baby required court review and hospital approval.
Khloe reached for Harrison’s hand.
“He knew Vanessa would confront me.”
“What happened before the shove?”
“Richard called and asked me to meet him outside before the hearing. He said he wanted to negotiate privately.”
“Why did Vanessa appear?”
“He brought her.”
Khloe described the top of the courthouse steps.
Richard told her to withdraw the emergency financial motion.
He claimed public exposure would destroy the company and leave their unborn daughter with nothing.
Then Vanessa took the folder from Khloe’s hand.
Khloe pulled it back.
Vanessa accused her of using the pregnancy to trap Richard.
“I tried to walk away,” Khloe said. “Richard told her not to let me take the documents inside.”
Harrison’s expression hardened.
“Those exact words?”
“Yes.”
“What did Vanessa say?”
“She said Richard had promised the house, the penthouse, and the company would be theirs.”
“Then?”
“She shoved me.”
Harrison recorded the statement only after Khloe agreed and medical staff confirmed she was alert enough to speak briefly.
He did not ask her to repeat details she could not remember.
Trauma affected memory.
Accuracy mattered more than creating the most dramatic version.
When Khloe rested, Harrison opened the sealed copy of her final evidence package.
Richard had transferred marital funds through six shell companies.
Some money remained inside the United States.
Some had moved into foreign investment accounts.
The transfers alone were not proof of theft. Business owners moved money for many lawful reasons.
The accompanying messages revealed intent.
RICHARD: FILE BEFORE THE BABY COMES.
VANESSA: WHAT IF KHLOE CLAIMS THE MONEY IS MARITAL?
RICHARD: BY THE TIME HER LAWYER FINDS IT, THE COMPANIES WILL BE EMPTY.
Another message concerned Khloe’s insurance.
VANESSA: WHY INCREASE IT NOW?
RICHARD: THE BANK REQUIRES COVERAGE WHILE SHE GUARANTEES THE DEVELOPMENT LOAN.
No bank required the increase.
Richard had raised the policy on Khloe’s life three months earlier.
Vanessa was listed indirectly through a company that would benefit if Richard inherited Khloe’s shares.
The policy did not prove they planned her death.
It proved that her death improved their financial position.
The distinction mattered.
Harrison found something worse inside an email from Richard’s personal adviser.
If Khloe dies before the divorce and the child does not survive, Richard’s claim against the family trust becomes substantially stronger.
Richard replied:
Understood.
Khloe’s daughter had always been an obstacle to his control of the trust.
Harrison contacted the trustee and secured an emergency review.
No lawful account was seized merely because Richard was cruel.
Transfers connected to suspected fraud were frozen by court order.
Operational funds for innocent employees remained available.
Harrison had dismantled corporations before.
He knew careless revenge could destroy workers while executives escaped with the money.
He would not let Richard use thousands of employees as human shields.
When Khloe finally saw Grace through the neonatal unit glass, her hand shook against the window.
“She is so small.”
“She is fighting.”
“Like her mother.”
Khloe looked toward Harrison.
“No.”
Her eyes hardened.
