Chapter 2 - THE HEARTBEAT BEHIND THE OPERATING ROOM DOOR

The ambulance reached Montgomery County Medical Center in eight minutes.

Harrison followed in an unmarked police vehicle with Detective Monroe.

Richard arrived separately with two attorneys.

Hospital security stopped him before he entered the trauma unit.

“My wife is in there.”

Detective Monroe faced him in the hallway.

“You are also a witness in an active investigation.”

“I did not push her.”

“No one said you did.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

That answer frightened him.

Inside the trauma bay, Khloe drifted in and out of consciousness.

Her blood pressure fell.

The fetal heartbeat weakened.

Dr. Elaine Porter examined the monitor and made the decision no family wanted to hear.

“We need an emergency delivery.”

Khloe caught the doctor’s sleeve.

“Will she live?”

“We are doing everything we can for both of you.”

Harrison stood beside the doorway in a hospital gown over his suit.

Khloe looked at him.

“Do not let Richard make decisions.”

“He will not.”

“The medical directive is in the folder.”

“I have it.”

“He changed the insurance.”

Harrison leaned closer.

“What insurance?”

But Khloe was already being moved.

The operating room doors closed between them.

Harrison stood perfectly still beneath the white hospital lights.

Blood had dried across his lapel.

The marks on his palms burned.

Detective Monroe approached.

“We obtained the courthouse footage.”

“And?”

“Vanessa initiated contact. Khloe tried to step away. Vanessa followed and shoved her with both hands.”

“Richard?”

“He watched the argument for nearly two minutes.”

“Did he intervene?”

“No.”

“Did he encourage Vanessa?”

“The camera has no clear audio.”

Harrison looked toward the operating room.

“What did witnesses hear?”

“One heard Richard tell Vanessa to get the folder. Another heard him say Khloe was trying to destroy them.”

The legal folder had been preserved as evidence after Harrison photographed the medical directive and provided the original to hospital staff.

Inside were records showing millions moved through companies controlled by Richard and Vanessa.

Khloe had discovered the transfers through a secondary cloud account.

Instead of confronting her husband, she copied everything and called Harrison.

For three months, brother and sister built the case quietly.

They traced assets.

Preserved messages.

Prepared divorce filings.

Requested emergency financial relief.

Khloe had been carrying the final supporting declarations to the courthouse.

Richard and Vanessa were waiting outside.

The confrontation had not been accidental.

At the hospital entrance, Vanessa was taken for formal questioning after receiving medical clearance.

She insisted Khloe threatened to expose private family matters and lunged toward her.

The video contradicted that claim.

Richard refused an interview.

His attorney released a statement calling the fall a tragic misunderstanding during an emotional marital dispute.

Harrison read it once.

Then he handed the phone back to Detective Monroe.

“He is establishing distance from Vanessa.”

“She already noticed.”

“Will she cooperate?”

“Fear makes people unpredictable.”

Four hours passed.

Then Dr. Porter entered the waiting room.

Harrison stood before she spoke.

“Your sister survived surgery.”

He closed his eyes.

“And the baby?”

“A girl. Premature, but alive. She is receiving respiratory support in intensive care.”

Harrison pressed one scraped hand against the wall.

“When can I see Khloe?”

“Soon.”

“What are her injuries?”

“A concussion, fractured wrist, two cracked ribs, and placental separation caused by the trauma. She lost significant blood, but she is stable.”

“Will she recover?”

“We expect her to.”

Harrison’s shoulders lowered for the first time.

Then Dr. Porter added:

“She asked us to restrict information from her husband.”

“That restriction stays.”

Richard heard part of the conversation from the far end of the hall.

“My daughter is alive?”

Harrison turned toward him.

Richard’s eyes were wet.

But the first question he asked was:

“Did Khloe say anything about the folder?”

Harrison stared at him.

The hallway became silent.

Richard realized his mistake too late.

Continue to the next part: Khloe awakens and reveals that Richard increased the insurance on her life just before Vanessa announced she was carrying his child.
