Chapter 1 - THE FALL BENEATH THE COURTHOUSE

“My baby.”
Khloe Harrington’s terrified gasp cut through the courthouse plaza as Vanessa Kensington shoved her backward with both hands.
Khloe’s low heel slipped from the marble edge.
Her legal folder burst open.
Bank records, property statements, and divorce documents scattered across the staircase while her body struck one step, then another.
She twisted instinctively, wrapping both arms around her eight month pregnant belly.
At the top of the stairs, Vanessa remained frozen with her hands still extended.
Richard Harrington stood beside her.
Khloe’s husband took one frightened step backward.
He did not reach for his wife.
He did not call her name.
He watched her fall.
Thirty steps below, Khloe stopped against the base of the railing.
A thin streak of blood appeared near her temple.
The plaza became silent.
Then Harrison Cole charged through the crowd.
He dropped beside his sister so violently that the marble tore the skin from both palms. He placed one hand behind her head and the other against the side of her belly.
“Khloe, look at me.”
Her eyes opened weakly.
“Stay awake.”
She gripped the lapel of his charcoal suit, leaving a dark mark across the fabric.
“Save her, Harry.”
“I will.”
“The baby stopped moving.”
Terror broke across Harrison’s face.
Only for one second.
Then the feared courtroom attorney returned.
He looked toward the top of the staircase.
Vanessa had gone pale.
Richard remained beside her, already calculating.
“Neither of you move,” Harrison said.
His voice was low enough that everyone leaned closer.
Detective Rachel Monroe had been leaving the courthouse after testifying in another case. She saw the shove from the plaza and began climbing toward Vanessa with two security officers.
Richard raised both hands.
“She slipped. Vanessa never touched her.”
A court clerk pointed toward the stone column above him.
“The security camera recorded everything.”
Vanessa grabbed Richard’s arm.
“Tell them she attacked me first.”
Richard pulled away from her so sharply that she nearly stumbled.
Harrison removed his black smartphone and aimed it toward both of them while remaining beside Khloe.
“Keep speaking,” he said. “Every lie becomes evidence.”
Paramedics rushed across the plaza.
One stabilized Khloe’s neck while another checked the baby’s heartbeat.
The monitor produced a faint, irregular rhythm.
“We need to move now.”
Harrison held Khloe’s hand as they lifted her onto the stretcher.
Richard finally started down the steps.
“Khloe, I’m coming with you.”
Harrison rose and blocked him.
“You watched her fall.”
“That is my wife.”
“You remembered that too late.”
Richard lowered his voice.
“You cannot threaten me. I own half this county.”
Harrison stepped closer.
“Then you should recognize the attorney who prosecuted the other half.”
Vanessa tried to retreat.
Detective Monroe caught her wrists and restrained her with controlled force.
“I didn’t mean for her to fall.”
“You can explain that after you are advised of your rights.”
Harrison gathered the blood marked legal folder from the stairs.
Richard saw the account numbers inside.
His face changed.
Harrison held the folder against his chest.
“You tried to bury my sister beneath your money.”
He looked directly into Richard’s eyes.
“She already gave me every account.”
The ambulance doors closed.
For the first time that morning, Richard forgot to pretend he cared about Khloe.

He stared only at the folder.
