Chapter 7 - THE EMPTY AMBULANCE

The contractions came too quickly.

Dr. Sloan examined Nora beneath emergency lights.

“She is in premature labor.”

“How long?” Adrian asked.

“I cannot predict it after chemical exposure.”

Mason’s team opened the locked door manually.

Smoke entered from the corridor.

Aaron had triggered a fire alarm on another floor.

Hospital staff began moving patients.

In the confusion, two emergency workers arrived with a stretcher.

Their uniforms and identification appeared valid.

Mason stopped them.

“Who ordered transport?”

“Hospital command. The maternity wing is losing power.”

Dr. Sloan checked her tablet.

The order appeared under her name.

She had not issued it.

The workers reached beneath the stretcher.

Mason drew his weapon.

They surrendered after federal agents surrounded the corridor.

The stretcher contained restraints and an oxygen mask connected to a sedative canister.

Aaron’s plan required Nora unconscious.

Adrian stayed beside her as the hospital transferred the unit to independent power.

Then Mason received a vehicle alert.

An ambulance had left the garage carrying a patient registered as Nora Vale.

Adrian looked toward his wife.

She remained in the room.

“They created a decoy,” Mason said.

The ambulance would draw police and Adrian’s private security away from the real extraction route.

Aaron knew Adrian would chase any vehicle carrying Nora’s name.

Adrian looked toward Mason.

“Send an unmanned surveillance team. I stay here.”

Nora reached for his hand.

“That is the first correct decision Russell did not expect.”

The contractions intensified.

Dr. Sloan prepared for emergency delivery.

Federal agents searched every floor.

The nurse who attacked Nora carried a map of the hospital service tunnels.

One route led from the maternity unit to an abandoned rehabilitation building across the street.

Aaron intended to move Nora through the tunnel while the ambulance became the visible target.

Mason sealed the tunnel exits.

Someone opened the door from the other side.

Aaron had a second access system.

Adrian remained in the delivery room while Mason joined the federal team below.

Nora’s breathing became uneven.

“I am scared.”

Adrian leaned closer.

“So am I.”

“You look calm.”

“Calm is what I am doing.”

The sentence made her smile despite the pain.

Dr. Sloan warned that the baby’s heart rate was falling.

They needed to deliver immediately.

As the medical team prepared, the ceiling lights flashed.

A hidden speaker activated.

Russell’s voice entered the room.

“You always chose difficult women, Adrian.”

Adrian looked upward.

Russell was not calling from custody.

The federal vehicle transporting him had been attacked outside the courthouse.

Aaron helped him escape.

Russell continued.

“The trust activated its punishment clause, but the child can still return control to the family later.”

Nora understood.

Russell did not only want the company now.

He wanted the future heir.

“You will never touch this baby,” she said.

“I do not need to. Celeste’s signature already exists on the birth documents.”

The medical computer changed.

Nora’s name disappeared from the patient screen.

Celeste Harrow appeared as the legal mother.

Even without physical custody, the network was attempting to create the official record before birth.

Dr. Sloan disconnected the computer.

“We use paper documentation.”

The door shook.

Someone struck it from the corridor.

Hospital security reported three armed men approaching through the service stairwell.

Adrian moved toward the entrance.

Nora caught his sleeve.

“Do not leave.”

He stopped.

Federal agents and hospital officers engaged the men outside.

No gunfire entered the room.

Dr. Sloan instructed Nora to push.

The baby’s heartbeat weakened again.

Nora screamed Adrian’s name.

He returned to her side and held her hand.

Their daughter was born at 4:17 in the morning.

She cried immediately.

Nora began sobbing.

Adrian pressed his forehead against hers.

Dr. Sloan placed the baby against Nora’s chest before anyone completed a document.

“Mother present,” she said clearly for the independent camera.

“Nora Bennett Vale.”

The door opened.

Mason entered with blood on his collar but no visible wound.

“Aaron escaped into the tunnel.”

“Russell?” Adrian asked.

“Not with him.”

A monitor near the door activated.

Celeste appeared through a live video call.

She was inside a moving vehicle.

Russell sat beside her holding a pistol.

“Adrian,” he said, “bring the baby to the mansion ballroom.”

Celeste’s face was bruised.

Russell continued.

“Or the woman who built your alibi dies before she can testify.”

Nora looked toward Celeste.

May you like

The woman who attacked her had become Russell’s hostage.

Continue to the next part: Adrian must decide whether saving Celeste is justice, mercy, or another trap designed to reach his newborn daughter.
