Chapter 6 - THE NURSE WHO DISAPPEARED

Rachel Dean had survived because she pretended the medication destroyed her memory.

Haven House staff moved her between properties under the name Rebecca Dale.

She listened.

Remembered.

Waited.

When federal agents found her, she provided names, access codes, and recordings made through a hidden device sewn into her hospital blanket.

One voice belonged to Mason’s deputy, Aaron Pike.

Aaron had supervised Nora’s protection whenever Mason traveled.

He knew the secret marriage.

He knew the pregnancy schedule.

He knew which hospital Nora planned to use.

Rachel’s recording captured him speaking with Dr. Shaw.

“When labor begins, create an ambulance diversion. The baby reaches Haven House. Nora does not.”

Mason listened twice.

Aaron had worked beside him for eleven years.

“I recruited him,” Mason said.

Adrian looked toward him.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Then do not make his choice your confession.”

Mason nodded.

He did not ask to be comforted.

Nora entered a protected maternity unit beneath another name.

Only four people knew the location.

Adrian.

Mason.

Dr. Rebecca Sloan.

Federal Agent Caroline Wells.

Nora refused to let Adrian turn the room into a fortress.

“No armed men inside.”

“One outside the door.”

“Visible?”

“No.”

“No cameras near the bed.”

“Agreed.”

“No medical decisions without Dr. Sloan explaining them to me directly.”

“Agreed.”

She studied her husband.

“You are learning.”

“Slowly.”

Celeste requested to cooperate.

She admitted participating in the forged surrogacy plan, the effort to erase the marriage, and the attack beside the ice sculpture.

She claimed she never intended to kill Nora.

Nora met her through glass.

“You raised a sharp object toward my face while I was on the floor.”

“I wanted the drive.”

“You wanted me frightened enough to surrender it.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know my medication was altered?”

“Not until the hospital.”

“Did you know Russell planned to take the baby?”

“I believed the child would legally become mine.”

“You cannot legally receive a child through the mother’s death.”

Celeste began crying.

“I spent my entire life being told I would marry Adrian and secure both families.”

“Adrian ended the engagement.”

“My mother said that was temporary.”

“So you treated me like an employee who stole your position.”

“Yes.”

Nora did not forgive her.

She asked why Celeste wanted to cooperate now.

“Russell will kill me too.”

“Fear does not make you trustworthy.”

“No.”

“What do you know?”

Celeste revealed a private maternity wing beneath the original Haven House estate.

Russell called it the nursery.

A surgical suite remained prepared for Nora’s delivery.

A gold bracelet carrying Celeste’s name waited beside the bassinet.

The plan had not been abandoned.

It had only lost its official support.

Federal agents raided the estate.

The nursery was empty.

The equipment had been removed hours earlier.

A message remained across the medical monitor.

WE DO NOT NEED THE HOUSE.

WE ONLY NEED THE MOTHER.

Aaron Pike disappeared from the security command center.

His access card opened the protected hospital garage twenty minutes earlier.

Mason ordered an immediate lockdown.

Nora had not yet begun labor.

The traitor entered early.

A nurse came into Nora’s room carrying medication.

Her badge identified her as Kelly Moore.

Dr. Sloan did not recognize the name.

Nora looked at the syringe.

“What is that?”

“Something to prevent early contractions.”

“Dr. Sloan did not order it.”

The nurse moved closer.

Nora pressed the emergency button.

Nothing happened.

Aaron had disabled the room system.

The nurse’s pleasant expression disappeared.

She grabbed Nora’s wrist.

Nora struck the medication tray toward the floor.

The syringe shattered.

Adrian entered with Mason seconds later.

The nurse attempted to reach another vial.

Mason restrained her.

Aaron’s voice entered through the ceiling speaker.

“You stopped one person.”

The hospital lights failed.

Emergency power activated.

The room doors locked.

Nora felt a sudden tightening across her stomach.

Then another.

The compound from the shattered syringe had entered through a cut on her hand.

May you like

Labor had begun.

Continue to the next part: Nora is taken through a dark hospital corridor while Adrian follows a false ambulance carrying his wife’s name.
