Chapter 2 - THE FILE MARKED FIRST HEIR

Russell Vale descended the staircase slowly.

At sixty three, he had spent decades appearing beside Adrian at company events, funerals, and family celebrations.

He became chairman of Vale Holdings after Adrian’s father died.

He had also been the first person Adrian trusted with the secret marriage.

Russell stopped several feet from the broken ice sculpture.

“That recording proves nothing.”

Adrian studied him.

“It is your voice.”

“Modern software can imitate anyone.”

“The file came from our foundation server.”

“Then someone planted it there.”

Celeste pulled against Mason’s grip.

“Russell told me Nora was stealing donor money.”

Nora looked toward her.

“So you tried to cut my face with ice?”

“I wanted the drive.”

“Why?”

“Because it contains private foundation information.”

Adrian took the secure tablet.

The file beneath Nora’s name contained a forged medical plan.

It described her as an anonymous gestational carrier hired by the Harrow family.

Celeste Harrow was listed as the intended mother.

Adrian Vale was listed as the genetic father.

Nora’s legal rights ended at delivery.

The agreement carried Nora’s signature.

She had never seen it.

Celeste’s face became pale as Adrian turned the document toward her.

“You planned to claim our child.”

“I never signed that.”

“Your signature is on every page.”

“Russell said the child belonged to the Vale family trust.”

Nora forced herself upright with Mason’s help.

“The child belongs to nobody.”

Russell looked around the ballroom.

“This conversation should continue privately.”

Adrian’s voice remained cold.

“You planned my wife’s death in private. The exposure can happen here.”

Several guests began stepping toward the exits.

Mason signaled his security team.

The ballroom doors closed.

“Nobody leaves until federal investigators arrive.”

A senator objected.

Adrian ignored him.

Nora examined the attached payment records.

Haven House received more than forty million dollars from the Vale Foundation over nine years.

The public knew Haven House as a maternity residence for women without insurance.

The hidden documents described something else.

Pregnant employees were admitted under false names.

Some signed contracts while sedated.

Others were declared medically incapable of caring for their babies.

Private families then received the children through sealed arrangements.

Nora found twenty seven maternal files.

Seven ended with the same word written beside hers.

Nonsurvival.

An elderly banquet server named Ruth Dalton stepped out of the crowd.

She had worked inside the Vale mansion for more than thirty years.

Her face shook as she looked at the records.

“My daughter went to Haven House.”

Russell turned toward her.

“This is not your concern.”

Ruth stared at him.

“Her baby was stillborn.”

Nora moved closer.

“What was your daughter’s name?”

“Anna Dalton.”

Mason searched the files.

Anna appeared under a different surname.

The report claimed she had abandoned a healthy baby boy and disappeared voluntarily.

Ruth covered her mouth.

“My daughter died three days after delivery.”

“Where is the child?” Nora asked.

The adoption line was encrypted.

Mason began copying the files to an independent server.

Russell looked toward Celeste.

“You were instructed to retrieve the drive quietly.”

Celeste’s expression changed.

“You said it only contained financial records.”

“You did not need details.”

“You listed me as the child’s mother.”

“You wanted to marry Adrian.”

“That engagement ended two years ago.”

“You still wanted the life.”

Celeste’s eyes moved toward Nora.

Envy appeared beneath the panic.

“You arrived from nowhere and took everything.”

Nora stared at her.

“I worked as a forensic accountant before I ever met Adrian.”

“You wore a maid’s uniform.”

“To discover why pregnant employees were disappearing.”

“You enjoyed deceiving everyone.”

“I enjoyed learning which guests would watch you hurt someone and remain silent.”

The words moved through the ballroom.

Several people lowered their eyes.

Adrian opened Nora’s legal file.

The forged surrogacy agreement depended on one fact.

Nora and Adrian were described as unmarried.

Their courthouse marriage did not appear inside the federal registration system.

Mason searched again.

“The license is gone.”

Adrian looked toward him.

“What do you mean?”

“There is no active record.”

Nora’s stomach tightened.

They had held the original certificate.

The county clerk entered it eight months earlier.

“The clerk who processed it retired,” Mason continued. “Her replacement reported a database error three weeks ago.”

Russell finally smiled.

“Then perhaps Adrian married nobody.”

Nora looked at her husband.

The secret that had protected them now made the marriage easier to erase.

Mason opened another document.

It carried a court declaration supposedly signed by Nora.

I, Nora Bennett, confirm that no legal marriage exists between myself and Adrian Vale.

The signature was dated two days earlier.

The witness line carried the name of Judge Martin Rowe.

Adrian recognized it.

Judge Rowe had died six months ago.

Russell lifted his champagne.

“Without a marriage, Nora is only a contracted surrogate carrying a Vale heir.”

Adrian moved toward him.

Mason stepped between them before anger became the evidence Russell wanted.

Nora touched Adrian’s arm.

“Do not give him the reaction he prepared.”

Russell’s eyes narrowed.

A siren sounded outside the mansion.

Not police.

An ambulance.

Two paramedics entered the ballroom carrying a stretcher and medical transfer order.

The physician listed on the order was Dr. Malcolm Shaw, Adrian’s family obstetrician.

The document stated that Nora was experiencing a psychiatric crisis and required immediate transfer to Haven House.

Nora stared at the signature authorizing the transfer.

It belonged to Adrian.

He had not signed it.
