Chapter 1 - THE WIFE IN THE BLUE UNIFORM

Celeste Harrow believed the ballroom belonged to her.
Every chandelier inside the Vale mansion burned with warm golden light. Hundreds of wealthy guests stood beneath silver winter decorations, sipping champagne while a string quartet played near the sweeping staircase.
Nobody challenged Celeste.
Not the politicians seeking donations from her family.
Not the executives hoping for access to Adrian Vale.
Not the staff members who lowered their eyes whenever her silver gown crossed the polished floor.
That was why she smiled when Nora Bennett slipped beside the shattered ice sculpture.
Nora wore a dark blue maid uniform.
Her brunette hair had partially fallen from its bun. Blood ran from a cut near her forehead. One hand protected her pregnant belly while the other pressed against the wet marble beneath the broken sculpture.
Celeste stood over her holding a sharp shard of ice.
“Staff who embarrass me do not belong here.”
Nora tried to rise.
Pain moved through her lower back.
Celeste caught her shoulder and pushed her down again.
Several guests watched.
Nobody intervened.
Nora looked toward the staircase.
Adrian was supposed to be meeting investors inside the west library. He did not know Celeste had ordered Nora away from the main ballroom.
He did not know the ice sculpture had been deliberately shattered.
Most importantly, he did not know what Nora had found inside it.
A small silver capsule remained hidden beneath her palm.
Celeste leaned closer.
“You thought wearing a uniform made you invisible.”
Nora’s breathing became shallow.
“It almost worked.”
Celeste’s smile disappeared.
“Give me the capsule.”
“No.”
“You have no idea what is inside.”
“I know exactly what is inside.”
Celeste pressed the sharp edge of the ice near Nora’s cheek.
“You will hand it over, then tell Adrian you fell.”
Nora looked around the ballroom.
An elderly senator turned his face away.
A charity director studied her champagne.
A hotel owner whispered something to his wife, but neither moved.
They were all willing to watch.
Celeste lowered her voice.
“You are carrying a child into a world that does not belong to you.”
Nora’s hand tightened over her stomach.
Then a man’s voice thundered from the entrance.
“What the hell is happening here?”
The music stopped.
Adrian Vale crossed the ballroom in a black tuxedo.
He did not run.
He moved with the terrifying control of a man who had already decided something irreversible.
Celeste released Nora’s shoulder.
The ice shard dropped from her hand.
“Adrian.”
He walked past her without answering.
He knelt beside Nora and removed his tuxedo coat. His hands remained steady as he placed it over her shoulders.
Then he saw the blood on her forehead.
His expression changed.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
The warmth vanished from his face.
“Are you hurt anywhere else?”
“My back.”
“The baby?”
“Still moving.”
He placed one careful hand beside hers.
Only after feeling the movement beneath her dress did he look toward Celeste.
She appeared genuinely confused.
“She caused a scene over a broken sculpture.”
Adrian stood.
“You raised a weapon toward her face.”
“It was ice.”
“You pushed a pregnant woman onto the floor.”
“She is a maid.”
Nora closed her eyes.
Celeste still did not understand.
The ballroom guests remained completely silent.
Adrian stepped between Nora and Celeste.
“She is not a maid.”
Celeste’s confidence weakened.
“Then what is she?”
“My wife.”
A gasp moved across the ballroom.
Celeste stared at him.
“That is impossible.”
Adrian did not repeat himself.
Nora had married him eight months earlier inside a private courthouse in Boston. Only six people knew.
The marriage remained secret because someone had begun following Nora shortly after she discovered irregular payments inside the Vale Children’s Foundation.
Adrian wanted her protected.
Nora wanted the investigation completed before the people responsible realized she had access to the accounts.
The maid uniform had been part of that plan.
Celeste looked from Adrian to Nora’s pregnant stomach.
“You married her?”
“Yes.”
“She is carrying your child?”
“Yes.”
The cruelty disappeared from Celeste’s face.
Panic replaced it.
Adrian noticed.
“Why does that frighten you?”
“It does not.”
Nora slowly opened her hand.
The silver capsule rested against her palm.
Celeste lunged.
Adrian’s security chief, Mason Reed, caught her before she reached Nora.
Two guards closed around her.
“Let me go!”
Mason took the capsule and opened it with gloved fingers.
Inside was a black memory drive.
Nora looked toward Adrian.
“Rachel hid it inside the ice sculpture.”
Rachel Dean had managed payroll for the Vale Foundation.
She disappeared three weeks earlier after telling Nora she had found payments connected to pregnant household employees.
Mason inserted the drive into a secure tablet.
Folders appeared across the screen.
Medical reports.
Insurance claims.
Pregnancy records.
Private payments approved through the Harrow Family Trust.
One file carried Nora’s name.
NORA BENNETT VALE.
PREGNANCY STATUS: THIRTY TWO WEEKS.
DELIVERY LOCATION: HAVEN HOUSE.
FINAL MATERNAL OUTCOME: NONSURVIVAL.
Adrian read the last word twice.
Nora’s breathing stopped.
Celeste struggled against the guards.
“That file is fake.”
Mason opened the attached audio recording.
A man’s voice filled the silent ballroom.
“Keep Nora alive until the child is delivered. After that, the wife is unnecessary.”
Adrian slowly turned toward the staircase.
His uncle, Russell Vale, stood near the upper landing holding a glass of champagne.

He had not moved since the recording began.
Continue to the next part: Adrian discovers the plan required his secret marriage to disappear before Nora gave birth.
