Chapter 8 - Beneath the Ballroom

We returned to the Whitmore Hotel before dawn.
Rachel and the newborn remained at a protected hospital under federal guard.
Alexander, Caroline, Mia, Daniel, Franklin, and I entered through the employee garage.
Police maintained the appearance that Cynthia had escaped.
We wanted her to believe the hotel remained under her control.
The underground event storage covered nearly half a city block.
It contained holiday decorations, antique furniture, temporary stages, and an old carousel once displayed in the Whitmore department store.
Mia recognized the painted horse from Cynthia’s video.
We moved through the dark storage aisles.
Music played faintly somewhere ahead.
A child’s lullaby.
Caroline stopped.
“That song was on the music box in our nursery.”
Alexander looked at her.
Only someone who knew their home intimately would choose it.
We found the toddler seated inside the carousel beneath a string of battery lights.
Cynthia stood nearby holding a gun.
The child looked unharmed.
A monitor beside her displayed Vanessa sitting under guard in the hotel library.
Cynthia had accessed the cameras.
Alexander stepped forward.
“Let the girl come to us.”
“Bring my sister.”
“She used you.”
“I know.”
“Then why protect her?”
Cynthia laughed through tears.
“Because I have protected her my entire life.”
She explained that Vanessa was seventeen when their parents died. Cynthia abandoned college and raised her.
Vanessa learned early that beauty and vulnerability could make powerful people rescue her.
Cynthia handled the consequences.
She paid debts.
Destroyed records.
Silenced witnesses.
When Vanessa became obsessed with Alexander, Cynthia helped her enter Caroline’s life.
Vanessa befriended Caroline at a charity board meeting, studied her marriage, and learned about the embryos.
“She wanted what Caroline had,” Cynthia said. “Not only Alexander. The name, the company, the child.”
Caroline looked at the toddler.
“Was this girl created from our embryo?”
Cynthia nodded.
Vanessa ordered Mercer to implant the third embryo into Rachel two years earlier.
When the girl was born, Vanessa raised her in secret with the help of a nanny.
She planned to reveal the child only if she could not fake her own pregnancy convincingly.
Then Caroline resurfaced.
Vanessa changed the plan.
She used the second embryo for Rachel’s current pregnancy and built the trust around the unborn boy.
Alexander’s family empire required a recognized heir.
Vanessa intended to control both children.
One as proof.
One as leverage.
The toddler reached toward Caroline.
She did not know her, but something in Caroline’s voice soothed her.
Cynthia lifted the gun.
“Do not.”
Mia stepped from behind me.
Cynthia’s face changed.
“You.”
Mia held my hand.
“The little girl is scared.”
“She is safe.”
“No. She is looking at the door.”
Cynthia glanced away for one second.
Daniel moved.
Cynthia fired.
The bullet struck the carousel mirror.
Alexander pulled the toddler from the horse while Caroline tackled Cynthia.
The gun slid beneath the platform.
Officers entered from both sides.
Cynthia was restrained.
The toddler screamed for Vanessa.
Alexander held her awkwardly.
Caroline approached.
The girl recoiled.
The truth carried no instant comfort.
Biology did not erase the only mother she remembered.
Caroline began crying.
Mia moved beside the toddler and showed her a small bracelet.
“Mine has stars.”
The toddler stopped screaming long enough to look.
Mia sat on the floor.
“You can sit here. Nobody has to hold you.”
Alexander lowered the child.
She remained close to him but watched Mia.
Cynthia laughed bitterly from the floor.
“You think finding her ends this?”
Alexander looked at her.
“Where is Vanessa’s nanny?”
Cynthia stopped laughing.
The nanny had disappeared with the child six hours earlier.
The woman in the storage room was not the same toddler from the video.
Mia studied her carefully.
The dress was identical.
The stuffed rabbit matched.
But the child’s hair was shorter.
Another decoy.
Alexander looked toward Cynthia.
“Who is she?”
Cynthia refused to answer.
Caroline noticed a hospital bracelet beneath the child’s sleeve.
It carried a name.
Emily Kane.
Lawrence Kane’s granddaughter.
The board member had allowed Vanessa to use his own family child as a substitute.
The real Whitmore girl remained missing.
Cynthia smiled.
“You are always one room behind.”
Then the hotel fire alarm activated.
Smoke began pouring into the underground storage.
May you like
Someone had set the records floor on fire.
