Chapter 5 - The Secret Floor

Police cleared the penthouse and covered the windows.

Elise remained alive, but the bullet had entered beneath her shoulder. Paramedics transported her through a service corridor guarded by officers.

The flash drive was encrypted.

My technical team began opening it while I reviewed every hotel camera.

If Caroline was inside, she had entered under another identity.

Three hundred guests had passed through the ballroom.

Dozens wore hats, veils, medical uniforms, or staff clothing.

Vanessa sat under guard in the penthouse library.

Alexander refused to speak to her.

Cynthia paced near the door.

Dr. Mercer requested an attorney.

Mia remained in the security office with Daniel, studying the guest photographs far more carefully than most adults.

She noticed a woman in a catering uniform appearing on three separate floors without carrying food.

The woman wore a mask and kept her face turned away from cameras.

Her staff badge belonged to an employee who called in sick that morning.

The final image showed her entering an elevator at 8:12.

The elevator display did not show a floor number.

I checked the system.

The Whitmore Hotel had forty two public floors.

The elevator had traveled to level forty three.

No such level appeared on official plans.

Franklin looked uncomfortable when I told him.

Alexander noticed.

“You know what is there.”

Franklin hesitated.

“Your grandfather maintained a private records floor above the penthouse. It was sealed after his death.”

“Why was I never told?”

“Your father believed the contents could damage the family.”

Alexander laughed once.

“Everyone protects this family by lying to me.”

The hidden floor required two biometric authorizations.

Alexander provided one.

The second belonged to a senior trustee.

Franklin’s fingerprint opened the elevator.

We rose in silence.

The doors opened onto a narrow hallway with dark wood walls and no windows.

Dust covered the carpet except for a fresh trail of footprints.

At the far end stood a vault door.

It was open.

Inside were shelves of paper records, old company ledgers, video tapes, and sealed legal agreements.

A woman stood before a table.

Her back faced us.

Alexander stopped.

“Caroline.”

She turned.

The scar beneath her lip was visible.

So were burn marks along the right side of her neck.

She was thinner than the woman in the photographs, but her eyes were unmistakable.

Alexander took one step forward.

Caroline raised a gun.

“Do not come closer.”

He stopped.

“You are alive.”

“I know what that means.”

“I searched for you.”

“You funded the men who followed me.”

“No.”

She held up financial records.

“Your authorization codes are on every payment.”

“They were forged.”

“That is what Vanessa said you would claim.”

Vanessa had followed under police guard.

Caroline saw her and pulled the trigger.

The bullet struck the wall beside Vanessa’s head.

Officers raised their weapons.

Alexander stepped between them.

“No one shoots.”

Caroline’s hands shook.

“She kept me drugged for five months.”

Vanessa said, “I saved your life.”

“You took my name, my embryos, and my husband.”

“I protected what you abandoned.”

Caroline moved toward the table.

On it lay photographs of Rachel Monroe, the real surrogate.

Rachel entered Whitmore employment seven years earlier. She later became a private financial investigator for Caroline.

Six months ago, Rachel discovered the hidden forty third floor while reviewing access logs.

She found evidence proving Vanessa and Cynthia had accessed the embryo storage facility using forged Whitmore credentials.

“Rachel contacted me,” Caroline said. “She helped me trace the embryos.”

Alexander looked at the ultrasound.

“Is she carrying our child?”

Caroline’s face softened briefly.

“Yes.”

“Did you authorize it?”

“No.”

The truth settled across the vault.

Vanessa had stolen the embryos and implanted one into Rachel without Caroline’s consent.

But why would Rachel agree?

Caroline explained that Rachel believed she was acting as a surrogate for a legally married couple whose identities were protected for security reasons.

She learned the truth after becoming pregnant.

Vanessa then threatened Rachel’s younger brother, who was serving a prison sentence under a false conviction arranged by Whitmore attorneys.

Cynthia whispered, “You said Rachel volunteered.”

Vanessa looked at her.

Cynthia finally understood she had been lied to too.

Caroline placed another document on the table.

It was the original succession agreement for the Whitmore empire.

Alexander’s unborn biological child would inherit a controlling interest.

If the child was born while Alexander remained married to another woman, the legal mother identified on medical documents could claim temporary guardianship.

Vanessa planned to present herself as the birth mother.

She needed Rachel hidden until delivery.

Then Dr. Mercer would falsify the birth records.

Alexander looked toward Vanessa.

“You planned to take Rachel’s baby and call it yours.”

“Our baby,” Vanessa said.

“No.”

She became desperate.

“You said you wanted a family.”

“I wanted a family with someone I trusted.”

Caroline lowered her gun.

For a moment, it seemed the danger had passed.

Then Mia’s voice came through my radio.

“Mom, the bad doctor is gone.”

Dr. Mercer had escaped from the security office.

My cameras showed him entering the hotel ambulance bay wearing a paramedic jacket.

He was pushing a covered medical stretcher.

Elise Warren was supposed to be on that stretcher.

But when police stopped the vehicle, the woman beneath the sheet was not Elise.

It was Rachel Monroe.

She was unconscious and in active labor.

Mercer accelerated the ambulance toward the exit.
