Chapter 7 - The First Baby

The pilot reached the second vehicle before police closed the runway.
He placed the carrier inside and accelerated through a maintenance gate.
Daniel followed with two units.
The rest of us remained with Rachel.
Her labor had progressed too far for transport.
Paramedics created an emergency delivery area inside the ambulance.
Caroline stayed beside her.
Alexander stood outside in the rain, listening as Rachel explained between contractions.
Two years earlier, she had answered an advertisement for a private surrogacy program. The intended parents remained anonymous because they were supposedly government officials.
Dr. Mercer handled every appointment.
Rachel delivered a baby girl at thirty five weeks.
She was told the infant died from respiratory failure.
Rachel never saw the body.
Mercer gave her an urn.
It contained no human remains.
Rachel discovered the truth only six months ago after finding a photograph in the hotel penthouse.
The baby was alive.
Vanessa held her in the picture.
Alexander looked at Vanessa’s archived phone records.
She had made monthly visits to a private residence in Connecticut.
The first baby might have been another Whitmore embryo.
Franklin checked the fertility clinic logs.
Three embryos were originally stored.
Alexander believed there were two.
Caroline stared at him.
“The clinic told us one failed during testing.”
It may not have failed.
Vanessa had been planning an heir long before Caroline’s disappearance.
The current pregnancy was not her first attempt.
Mia sat beneath a blanket inside our vehicle, feeling guilty for leaving it.
I held her.
“You saw something important.”
“I also did something dangerous.”
“Yes.”
She waited for punishment.
Instead, I said, “Both can be true.”
On the runway, Rachel delivered a healthy baby boy.
His cry rose above the storm.
Alexander covered his face.
Caroline held the infant while paramedics treated Rachel.
For one brief moment, the stolen plan became a living child who knew nothing about trusts, companies, or the adults fighting over him.
Rachel looked at Alexander.
“He is yours.”
Alexander approached slowly.
He touched the baby’s hand.
Then he stepped back.
“He is yours first.”
Rachel began crying.
No one had asked what she wanted.
Vanessa intended to erase her.
The Whitmore lawyers would have treated her as a vessel.
Alexander refused.
Franklin warned that the trust already named Vanessa as legal mother.
“Then challenge it.”
“It may freeze company control.”
“Let it.”
Alexander looked at the child.
“No business is worth stealing someone’s son.”
Caroline watched him.
For the first time, some of her suspicion faded.
Daniel called from the pursuit.
The pilot’s car had crashed near an industrial park.
The carrier was gone.
A witness saw a woman transfer it into a white van.
The woman matched Cynthia.
Cynthia was supposed to be under guard at the hotel.
She had escaped through the hidden records floor using Franklin’s biometric authorization.
Franklin went pale.
“I did not authorize it.”
Someone had copied his print.
Cynthia contacted Alexander fifteen minutes later.
Her voice came through the vehicle speaker.
“I have the girl.”
“What girl?”
“The child Rachel delivered two years ago.”
“Where are you?”
“I will exchange her for Vanessa.”
Vanessa was now in police custody at the hotel.
Alexander said no.
Cynthia began crying.
“You do not understand. Vanessa will tell them I planned everything.”
“Did you?”
“I helped with documents. I never agreed to hurt Rachel.”
“You carried the pregnancy belly out of the dressing room.”
“She said the announcement was the only way to force the trust.”
“You tried to remove Mia.”
“Because the child destroyed the plan.”
Mia heard her name.
I felt her body stiffen.
Alexander demanded proof the girl was alive.
Cynthia sent a video.
A toddler sat inside a van holding a stuffed rabbit.
She had Alexander’s dark eyes.
Caroline touched the screen.
The child turned toward someone outside the frame and said one word.
“Mommy.”
Cynthia whispered, “She calls Vanessa that.”
Alexander closed his eyes.
Vanessa had raised the stolen child.
Cynthia gave an address at an abandoned Whitmore distribution center.
“Bring Vanessa alone. No police.”
The call ended.
Franklin examined the video metadata.
The location was false.
The signal came from somewhere near the Whitmore family estate.
Caroline looked at Alexander.
“Vanessa kept the child close to you.”
The mansion had a sealed east wing unused since Alexander’s mother died.
No current security cameras covered it.
Mia looked at the video again.
She pointed toward a wooden horse behind the toddler.
“I saw that at the ballroom.”
The horse belonged to an antique carousel displayed in the hotel’s underground event storage.

Cynthia and the child were still inside the hotel.
