Chapter 4 - The Woman Behind the Mask

The live feed lasted twenty seconds.

Then the ballroom screen went black.

Alexander stood beneath it, staring at his own reflection in the dark surface.

Franklin picked up the trust documents.

“What remaining transfer documents?”

Vanessa refused to answer.

Cynthia looked toward her sister.

“You told me everything was already filed.”

“It was supposed to be.”

Franklin searched the legal folder and found a second agreement hidden beneath the trust.

It transferred Alexander’s controlling shares into a temporary guardianship if he became unable to make decisions during the birth of the heir.

The guardian named in the document was Cynthia.

The signature page remained blank.

Alexander looked at both sisters.

“You needed me to sign tonight.”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“The gala announcement created the necessary public record. After you recognized the child as your heir, the trust became harder to challenge.”

“You built a pregnancy around stolen embryos.”

“They were not stolen.”

“They belonged to Caroline and me.”

Cynthia finally spoke.

“Caroline authorized the transfer.”

“Then why fake Vanessa’s pregnancy?”

“Because Caroline refused to return.”

Alexander stared at her.

“Start from the beginning.”

Cynthia sat down as though her knees had weakened.

Three years earlier, Caroline discovered illegal payments connected to Whitmore shipping contracts. She believed senior executives were using disaster relief shipments to move restricted technology overseas.

She planned to give evidence to federal investigators.

The night her sailboat disappeared, she was supposed to meet an agent at Blackstone Harbor.

The boat exploded before she arrived.

Caroline survived because a fisherman pulled her from the water.

She suffered burns and memory loss.

The fisherman contacted Vanessa, whose number appeared in Caroline’s emergency file.

Vanessa hid her in a private home.

Alexander’s eyes turned cold.

“You knew she was alive from the beginning.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“For the first week.”

“You attended her memorial.”

“I thought she died later.”

Cynthia interrupted.

“That is not true.”

Vanessa turned toward her.

Cynthia’s voice shook, but she continued.

“Caroline regained consciousness. She asked for Alexander. Vanessa showed her forged payment records proving he financed the sabotage.”

Alexander looked at Vanessa.

“You convinced my wife I tried to murder her.”

“She was going to destroy your family.”

“She was trying to expose criminals.”

“She did not know where the damage would stop.”

Vanessa admitted she kept Caroline hidden for five months.

Then Caroline escaped with help from Elise Warren.

After that, Vanessa lost track of her.

Cynthia claimed Caroline contacted her six months ago. She wanted access to the frozen embryos because she believed Alexander would never forgive her disappearance unless she returned carrying his child.

Alexander closed his eyes.

“That does not sound like Caroline.”

Franklin agreed.

“She would not use a child as leverage.”

Vanessa laughed softly.

“You remember the woman you loved. Trauma changes people.”

Mia touched my hand.

“She is lying again.”

Vanessa looked at her.

“You have no idea what you are saying.”

Mia pointed toward Cynthia.

“She is scared of her sister.”

Cynthia’s face collapsed.

Children notice power without needing language for it.

Cynthia had defended Vanessa loudly, but each time Vanessa moved, Cynthia watched her for permission.

I asked Cynthia whether she had spoken directly with Caroline.

“Only through voice messages.”

“Did you ever see her?”

“No.”

“Then how did you know she authorized the embryo transfer?”

“Elise brought signed documents.”

Franklin examined them.

The signatures appeared genuine, but the notary seal belonged to a law office closed two years earlier.

The authorization could have been forged.

Alexander looked at Dr. Mercer.

“Whose embryo was implanted?”

“One created from your genetic material and Caroline’s.”

“How do you know?”

“I received a laboratory certificate.”

“From whom?”

“Elise.”

Everything led back to the missing nurse.

My officers searched hotel cameras for her.

She had left the dressing corridor seven minutes before Mia spoke.

Her vehicle remained in the staff garage.

She was still inside the building.

Daniel found a maintenance elevator activated on the forty first floor.

The floor contained private Whitmore residences, including Alexander’s penthouse.

We moved upstairs with police officers now entering the hotel through the lobby.

Alexander insisted on coming.

Mia remained with Daniel in the command room.

Before leaving, she pulled my sleeve.

“The woman on the screen was not Caroline.”

“How do you know?”

“The necklace was backward.”

I looked at her.

She had seen Caroline’s memorial portrait in the ballroom. The necklace pendant rested against the left side of her chest because of the way the chain clasp sat.

On the masked woman, it hung on the right.

Someone had put it on without knowing how Caroline wore it.

The live video was staged.

The penthouse door stood open.

Inside, drawers had been emptied and paintings removed from the walls.

A trail of blood led toward the nursery Vanessa had spent months decorating.

We entered with weapons drawn.

Elise Warren sat on the floor beside the crib.

Blood covered one sleeve of her nurse’s uniform.

She held a flash drive in her hand.

Alexander knelt beside her.

“Where is Caroline?”

Elise looked at Vanessa, who had been brought upstairs under guard.

“She is not the one you should be asking about.”

“Where is the pregnant woman?”

Elise gave me the flash drive.

“Her name is Rachel Monroe.”

I knew the name.

Rachel had worked as a night auditor at the hotel until six months earlier.

She disappeared after reporting security irregularities in the Whitmore penthouse.

Elise tried to speak again.

A shot shattered the penthouse window.

She collapsed against Alexander.

Someone had fired from the building across the street.

Before losing consciousness, Elise whispered, “Caroline is inside the hotel.”

Continue to the next part: A sniper silences the nurse as the missing first wife hides somewhere inside the locked hotel.
