Chapter 24 - What Discipline Means

At twenty one, I volunteered as a coding tutor at a community center.

One kid named Mason stole three cookies from snack table before session.

He hid them in hoodie.

The coordinator caught him.

My body reacted before brain.

Drawer.

Scott.

Greedy.

Discipline.

Then Mason said:

“I didn’t eat lunch.”

Coordinator handed him a sandwich.

That simple.

Later I told Mom.

She said:

“Did you give him cookie?”

“Three.”

“Reckless.”

“Shut up.”

We laughed.

I understood something.

Rules matter.

Children need boundaries.

Scott used that truth to hide abuse.

The opposite of abuse is not no rules.

It is rules that protect the child rather than satisfy the adult’s need for control.
