Chapter 19 - Thomas Gets Older

Fourteen years is long.

Not forever.

Thomas aged in prison.

I did not see.

At thirty one, victim services notified me his release eligibility date approaching after credits? If 14 years, Emma 18 + maybe 12 actual years = 30. Fine.

He would transition to supervised release.

I panicked.

Old body memory.

Locked windows.

Checked doors.

Therapist helped safety plan.

Not because he had threatened recently.

Because fear does not require current evidence to wake.

Then probation conditions:

No contact with me.

No contact with Mom unless she consents and approved.

No possession of weapons.

Substance treatment.

Financial monitoring.

Employment requirements.

Geographic restrictions initially.

He moved to another county.

Not my city.

Then victim services asked if I wanted updated photo.

“No.”

Good.

Then Thomas requested through probation to send apology letter.

I declined.

A year later, asked again.

I said yes.

Why?

Curiosity again.

The letter was four pages.

First:

Emma, I am sorry for what I did.

Then:

I spent years telling myself I had been strict because you were disrespectful.

Good.

Then:

That was a lie.

Better.

He admitted:

Breaking arm.

Choking.

Belt.

Threatening before CPS.

Trust fraud.

Then:

I blamed alcohol.

Money.

Your mother.

You.

My childhood.

Prison gave me enough time to run out of people to blame.

That sentence felt rehearsed but true enough.

Then:

I do not expect forgiveness.

Good.

Then something I hated:

I loved you like a daughter.

I stopped reading.

Days later, continued.

Maybe he believed.

Love does not guarantee safety.

He wrote:

I thought providing food and a house gave me the right to control you.

Same pattern as so many.

Then:

It didn’t.

Final:

I will not contact you again unless you ask.

He kept that.

I never asked.

Then Mom.

Did she want contact with Thomas?

No.

He requested once.

She declined.

No reconciliation.

Good.

Then Thomas found job in warehouse under supervision.

Paid remaining restitution.

Eventually completed.

No new arrests.

I was glad.

Not for him exactly.

For people around him.

Then I asked therapist:

“Does it mean he changed?”

“Maybe.”

“Do I need to know?”

“No.”

That freed me.

Safety can exist without verdict on someone’s soul.

Then Julia.

She aged too.

Retired.

We became family in ordinary way.

Fights.

She hated my boyfriend once.

She was right. Different story.

We argued about Christmas.

She borrowed my car and scratched.

No abuse.

No fear.

Conflict without danger taught me more than any lecture.

Then Mom and Julia eventually tolerated each other.

Not sisters.

Shared events.

No forced closeness.

At thirty three, I married? Maybe user story could include romantic future, but not necessary. Could have partner. Let's decide Emma later marries a park ecologist named Ben? Could be nice but not central. Maybe no need. We can mention long term partner at end.

I built career in environmental compliance.

Interesting.

Facts still mattered.

But not because Thomas.

I liked rivers.

At work, once someone falsified sampling data.

I reported.

Colleague joked:

“You really hate bad records.”

May you like

I smiled.

If only they knew.
