Chapter 18 - Linda Without Thomas

Mom spent years learning who she was without crisis.

That sounds easy.

It was not.

Thomas had made every decision for so long she panicked over ordinary things.

Car repairs.

Taxes.

Dating? None.

Then she joined counseling group.

Not for abused women only.

For people who had enabled family violence.

Important.

She did not want group where she could disappear entirely into victim identity.

She said:

“I need a place where someone says yes, you were afraid, and yes, you hurt someone.”

That sounded right.

Then work.

Insurance office.

Promoted.

Restitution completed after six years.

She sent me court notice.

I replied:

Received.

Same as our family language now.

Then she asked if I wanted money beyond restitution.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I don’t want our relationship to become debt.”

She cried later perhaps, not in front.

Then trust.

She never asked balance.

Not once.

At thirty, I told her voluntarily.

Not number.

“That money is okay.”

She nodded.

“Good.”

Then Dad.

We visited grave together for first time since I was nine.

Mom brought flowers.

I expected anger.

Instead she said:

“I’m sorry, Michael.”

I almost said:

He can’t hear.

Didn’t.

Then:

“I told her you left nothing.”

She cried.

“I made your planning sound like abandonment.”

I stood beside.

No need comfort.

Then we left.

On drive, I asked:

“Do you think he would forgive you?”

Mom shook head.

“I don’t get to decide for dead people.”

Good.

Then Thomas’s mother contacted me.

I had not seen her in years.

She wanted to apologize for saying during trial:

“Thomas would never hurt a child.”

She had not known.

I declined meeting.

She sent letter.

I read.

No relationship.

Not every branch needs healing.

Then Mark, Thomas’s brother, finished probation and restitution.

He asked through attorney to apologize.

No.

Kevin too.

No.

I did not need collection.

Then media podcast requested interview.

No.

Documentary.

No.

One article years earlier used headline:

THE GIRL WITH FIFTY RECORDINGS.

I hated.

I was not girl with recordings.

I was person.

Then at thirty two, I agreed to speak anonymously to training for CPS and emergency clinicians about coercion and evidence.

No face.

No name.

I emphasized:

Do not ask “Why didn’t you tell?”

Ask:

“What made telling unsafe?”

Do not assume calm parent means safe.

Interview children privately.

Repeated inconsistent injuries matter.

Mandatory reports create chances even when first case closes.

And:

Do not promise outcomes you cannot control.

Dr. Collins never promised Thomas would go to prison.

He said:

Okay.

Then did job.

That mattered.

Then I received email from him after training organizer realized connection? Maybe no. Let's keep separate.

I later looked him up publicly.

Still emergency physician.

May you like

No need contact.

Some people are important because they entered one room at right moment and then left.
