Chapter 11 - Mom Testifies

Mom took the stand at a pretrial hearing.

Not the main trial yet.

Thomas’s attorney challenged admissibility of some statements and search evidence.

I did not attend in person.

I watched later transcript.

Mom looked small in description.

That bothered me.

Small does not mean innocent.

She admitted Thomas first hit me when I was ten.

“What did you do?”

“I told him to leave.”

“Did he?”

“For two nights.”

“Then?”

“I let him return.”

“Why?”

“He apologized.”

Then second time.

Third.

By twelve, she had stopped asking him to leave.

Why?

“Money. Fear. Shame. I thought I could manage him.”

Then trust fraud.

Thomas’s attorney asked:

“Did Mr. Grayson force you to sign the first Pathway reimbursement?”

“No.”

There.

“Why sign?”

“He told me the trust should reimburse us because raising Emma was expensive.”

“Did you believe that?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know invoice described tutoring Emma never received?”

“Yes.”

I stopped reading.

Then:

“When did Mr. Grayson begin threatening you regarding prior fraud?”

“After Sterling started asking questions.”

“So for several years, you participated voluntarily?”

Mom cried.

“Yes.”

That mattered.

Then abuse.

“Did you ever strike Emma?”

“No.”

True.

“Did you ever tell Thomas to hurt her?”

“No.”

Probably true.

“Did you attempt to stop him?”

“Sometimes.”

“Did you call police?”

“No.”

“Did you take Emma to doctor after strangulation?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“I was afraid.”

Then prosecutor:

“Afraid of what?”

Mom answered:

“That Thomas would be arrested, that trust fraud would come out, that Emma would be taken, that I would lose the house.”

Not:

Afraid he would kill me.

Maybe that too.

But not only.

Then hospital.

“You told Emma to say she slipped?”

“Yes.”

“You grabbed her wrist?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To make her stop talking.”

That sentence.

No euphemism.

Then:

“Did you know Thomas broke her arm?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know he did it intentionally?”

“I saw him twist it.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“And you tried to conceal?”

“Yes.”

I closed transcript.

Could not continue.

Julia sat beside me.

“Want me to finish?”

“No.”

Later I did.

Mom testified that after Thomas broke arm, he said:

“If she tells, we all go down.”

Mom believed.

Then when I produced phone, she realized:

“We already had.”

That phrase eventually became article headline.

I hated.

Then plea.

Thomas refused again.

He called Mom traitor.

Recorded jail call to brother:

“Linda’s making shit up to save herself.”

But recordings corroborated.

Then witness intimidation.

Thomas tried send message through family friend:

Tell Emma not to exaggerate if she wants mother home.

Friend reported.

New charge.

That ended bail chances.

Then Mom’s plea finalized before Thomas’s trial.

She pleaded guilty to:

Child endangerment.

Obstruction of child abuse investigation.

Conspiracy to commit trust fraud.

False statements.

She agreed to testify.

Sentencing after Thomas.

Potential prison.

No guarantee probation.

She knew.

Then she requested letter to me.

I declined.

Not yet.

Therapy.

Arm cast removed after seven weeks.

My forearm looked thin.

Bruised skin faded.

Physical therapist handed me foam ball.

“Squeeze.”

Weak.

I hated weakness.

She said:

“Muscle comes back.”

I squeezed.

Then one day I noticed finger bruises on neck gone.

No photograph needed anymore.

I touched skin.

Nothing.

May you like

For first time, evidence had outlasted injury.

That felt strange.
