Chapter 8 - The Device Inside My Foundation

The access came from an IP address assigned to Isabelle Laurent Foundation.

My foundation.

Not Ashford.

Not Victor’s office.

Not Celeste’s house.

Mine.

That was bad.

Marcus immediately ordered forensic preservation.

No wiping.

No internal cleanup.

Independent cyber team.

Good.

The source device:

ARCHIVE WS 12.

An old workstation in the foundation records room.

Rarely used.

Who had physical access?

Seven employees.

Marcus.

Two archivists.

IT.

Board secretary.

Outside records contractor.

And me, technically.

Security camera showed the room.

Night of export:

One person entered.

Foundation archivist Emily Shaw.

Forty nine.

Worked there eleven years.

Trusted.

She agreed to interview.

“I exported Daniel footage.”

Silence.

“Why?”

“Victor told me it was evidence for an internal fraud review.”

“How could Victor order foundation staff?”

“He didn’t.”

“Then?”

“Celeste called.”

Emily had known Celeste socially through foundation galas.

Celeste said Elena was recovering from surgery and authorized urgent assistance.

Emily believed.

Did she verify with Marcus?

No.

Why?

Celeste sent an email appearing from Marcus.

Fake.

Address:

[email protected]

Real domain:

meridiansovereigndesk.com

Lookalike.

Again.

Emily logged into Ashford archive using an old password stored in foundation migration files.

Marcus’s credential.

She found Daniel footage from weeks earlier.

Celeste instructed:

Export clip for counsel.

Emily did.

Did she alter timestamp?

“No.”

Then who?

She uploaded clip to secure share.

Recipient:

Ashford Compliance.

After that, metadata changed.

So Emily facilitated unknowingly.

Then one more file she copied at Celeste’s request.

CARDINAL.

My chest tightened.

“What was in it?”

She never opened.

Encrypted zip.

Sent to same secure share.

Then Celeste had access to Cardinal before Daniel discovered fragments.

Why?

Maybe she knew exactly what it was.

Then Emily cried.

“I thought I was helping protect Elena.”

I believed she thought that.

But trust still broke.

She had allowed stepmother authority where none existed.

Then cyber logs showed altered video downloaded by Victor’s assistant.

Timestamp overlay added with commercial editing software.

Direct.

Then fake messages.

Created from a screenshot generator on the same assistant’s laptop.

Direct.

Then offshore approvals.

Certificate renewal requested by Victor.

Notarized by Celeste.

Direct.

The framing architecture was nearly complete.

But Cardinal remained unknown.

Then police searched Victor’s office.

One locked cabinet.

Inside:

Daniel’s copied certificate.

Lookalike domain invoices.

Security stills.

And a red folder.

CARDINAL.

Empty.

The documents had been removed.

When?

Security camera:

Two hours after banquet.

Someone entered while Victor was at hospital? Actually Victor maybe police interview. Who entered?

Celeste.

She left carrying a slim document case.

Then her driver took her home.

Police later searched pursuant to warrant.

No red folder.

No Cardinal files.

Did she destroy?

Unknown.

Her fireplace contained burned paper.

Forensic recovery partial.

One readable phrase:

ISABELLE LAURENT BIOBANK ROYALTY.

My mother’s patents.

Cardinal related to biomedical assets.

Then another fragment:

SPECIAL BENEFICIARY E.A.

Elena Ashford?

Maybe.

Then:

DO NOT DISTRIBUTE BEFORE AGE 30.

I was twenty eight.

Something was scheduled for my thirtieth birthday.

Maybe an inheritance.

Maybe a control right.

Celeste knew.

Victor may not.

That explained her warning:

Do not underestimate her mother’s foundation.

Then Marcus checked foundation governing documents.

No age thirty clause.

Trust?

Patent foundation not.

Maybe Cardinal was separate.

Then my mother’s estate attorney.

Dead.

But records stored with Arthur Cross.

Arthur searched.

One sealed envelope.

ISABELLE CARDINAL INSTRUCTIONS.

He had never opened because release condition required:

Elena reaches thirty or independent medical incapacity review after major cardiac event.

My heart surgery could have triggered early review.

That was why Cardinal suddenly mattered.

The moment I nearly died, a dormant clause activated.

Someone in the family realized before I did.

Then Arthur looked at Celeste’s emails.

“She asked me whether your surgery counted as incapacity.”

“When?”

Four days before Daniel’s arrest.

My skin went cold.

“What did you tell her?”

“I said no. Temporary surgical recovery is not incapacity.”

Then:

“What happens if I am incapacitated?”

Arthur looked away.

“Cardinal control passes temporarily to your designated family fiduciary.”

“Who?”

He opened the sealed index.

Designation:

Richard Ashford.

My father.

Dead.

Successor:

Celeste Ashford.

There.

If I became legally incapacitated before thirty, Celeste would temporarily control Cardinal.

May you like

Now her interest in my weakness had a financial shape.

Continue to the next part: Elena’s heart surgery activated a dormant review of Cardinal, and Celeste was the named successor who could control it if Elena were declared incapacitated before age thirty.
