Chapter 14 - The Trial Before I Was Born

The prototype that killed Eleanor Cross was not the device inside my chest.
Different generation.
Different materials.
Different company.
That distinction mattered.
The original trial happened nearly three decades earlier.
Isabelle Laurent was a junior engineer.
Not trial director.
She discovered manufacturing defects after one participant died and two suffered complications.
She reported.
Trial stopped.
Company dissolved.
Several patents later transferred into a cleanup entity.
Isabelle bought some rights.
Improved technology over decades.
Eventually those patents became valuable.
Aurora Clinical Trust paid affected families.
Why privately?
Settlement program supervised by lawyers.
Not hush money necessarily.
Some participants signed releases.
Arthur’s family did not.
Eleanor died before settlement.
Her parents rejected.
Then later Arthur became lawyer for Ashford.
Did he tell my parents his sister was Eleanor?
Richard knew.
Isabelle knew.
Why hire him?
Maybe reconciliation.
Arthur said:
“Your mother asked me to help make sure no family ever disappeared from the records again.”
That sounded noble.
Then why did he help Celeste hide Nathan?
Because people fail principles when convenience arrives.
He admitted.
Then Aurora payments.
Five hundred thousand annually was not all to Eleanor family.
It funded long term monitoring and restitution pool.
Why inside Cardinal?
Because early patent royalties paid.
Legitimate.
Then one anomaly.
After Isabelle died, Aurora payments increased.
Who authorized?
Richard.
Why?
A second claimant emerged.
Name sealed.
Then after Richard died:
Celeste continued automatically.
She may not have known details.
Then Victor discovered Aurora two years ago.
Email:
What is this half million charity drain?
Celeste:
Leave it.
Victor:
Why?
Celeste:
Your father said never touch.
For once she followed.
Then Daniel found Aurora while reconciling.
He did not suspect fraud because payments consistent.
So old trial was not connected to framing.
Maybe.
Then independent audit found something else.
One year ago, Aurora sent $1.8 million out.
Not regular.
Recipient:
CROSS MEDICAL LEGACY.
Arthur stared.
“I don’t know that entity.”
Another shell using familiar name.
Beneficial owner:
E. ASHFORD.
Which E?
Elena?
Potential.
Documents used my passport again.
Same identity kit as fake royalty shell.
Victor’s group had reused my documents to siphon from Aurora too.
Why?
$1.8 million covered one of Victor’s failed investments.
So even the restitution pool had been raided.
Celeste’s red ledger had no entry.
Did she know?
She said no.
Emails supported Victor acted alone on Aurora.
That mattered.
He had begun stealing beyond what Celeste sanctioned.
Then when Celeste found out?
Three months ago.
Her email:
You touched Aurora?
Victor:
Temporary.
Celeste:
Put it back.
Victor:
After hotel refinance.
Celeste:
If Arthur learns, we are finished.
She protected him again instead of reporting.
Complicit after the fact.
Then Daniel discovered the $1.8 million anomaly.
His first note:
Victor stole from patient restitution.
That likely triggered fury.
Then his next:
If Elena sees this after surgery, it will destroy her.
Again he delayed telling me.
Everybody protecting me.
Everybody choosing for me.
Then prosecutors added this to motive for framing.
Victor was not just covering trust misuse.
He stole from a fund created because patients were harmed by technology connected to my mother.
If public, reputation catastrophic.
Then banquet.
He poured boiling soup over my surgical wound while calling me a criminal’s wife.
The symbolism felt almost too cruel.
He had stolen patient restitution, then injured a recovering cardiac patient.
No one could have scripted better evidence of character.
But courts decide acts, not symbolism.
Then assault video was clear.
Victor’s lawyers explored plea? Too early.
No final.
Then Daniel’s case.
Prosecutors formally withdrew the most serious theft count based on corrupted evidence? Could be plausible once frame proven. Let's say the court vacated asset restraint and prosecution moved to dismiss charges without prejudice pending complete review. That is not final innocence but strong.
Daniel came home.
Not triumphant.
Tired.
He stood in our kitchen and said:
“I should have told you earlier.”
“Yes.”
“I thought your heart couldn’t take it.”
“My heart survived surgery.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
“Next time, let me decide what it can take.”
“Okay.”
Then Marcus.
Same conversation.
Arthur.
Same.
No more protection through silence.
Then Celeste requested meeting.
She wanted to give evidence against Victor.
Self preservation.
Maybe truth.
She admitted:
She authorized Daniel certificate renewal.
She knew Victor would create a transaction trail.
She believed he would only make Daniel appear conflicted enough to stop his audit.
She claimed she did not know he would fabricate full eight million theft and push arrest.
Do emails support?
Some.
Victor:
Once packet goes, he’s finished.
Celeste:
No police.
Victor:
Too late if regulators see.
Maybe she did not intend arrest.
But she still built weapon.
Then:
“I never wanted Elena hurt.”
I looked at my chest.
“You sat there while he poured boiling soup on me.”
Her face broke.
“I froze.”
“No. You watched.”
She had no answer.
Then she offered one final file.
Victor kept a backup outside family offices.
A cloud vault.
Password phrase based on our father.
Police obtained access through legal process with her cooperation.
Inside:
Framing documents.
Aurora theft.
Fake Elena shell.
And folder:
AFTER ELENA 30.
My pulse changed.
Victor had a plan for what happened when Cardinal converted.
May you like
He knew more than Celeste claimed.
Continue to the next part: Victor’s private vault contains an “After Elena 30” plan, proving he knew about Cardinal’s future conversion and had been preparing for Elena’s thirtieth birthday long before her surgery.
