Chapter 12 - Charles’s Half

Charles was not only the family embarrassment.
He was an original Cardinal contributor.
Why hide it?
Because after his unauthorized collateral scandal, Richard wanted no appearance that Charles controlled sensitive medical assets.
So they restructured.
Charles contributed:
Cash.
Two early venture stakes.
A warehouse property later sold.
Estimated seed value:
$11 million.
Isabelle contributed patents and research equity.
Together they created Cardinal.
Purpose:
Separate high risk medical investments from the main Ashford trust.
Then Charles later misused family trust collateral elsewhere.
Richard removed him.
But what happened to his Cardinal interest?
According to Marcus:
Charles agreed to exchange some rights for debt forgiveness.
Some.
Not all.
Missing page documented remainder.
If remainder survived, Nathan had potential claim.
How large today?
Unknown.
Could be huge if percentage followed growth.
Could be limited fixed amount.
Need original.
Then Nathan’s anger made sense.
His father told him something remained.
The family told him nothing.
Then Celeste’s red ledger note:
Do not let Nathan trigger origin adjustment before Elena 30.
So she knew missing page mattered.
Why would she hide it?
Because if Nathan had rights, Cardinal voting percentages changed.
Celeste’s temporary successor authority might shrink.
Victor’s borrowing exposure might become easier to challenge.
Then did Victor know?
Email:
Victor:
Why are you scared of Nathan?
Celeste:
Because his father signed things you never read.
So no full knowledge.
Again Celeste carried deeper secrets than Victor.
Then police found the missing red ledger page.
Not in Celeste’s bank box.
In Victor’s office shred bin? Too easy. Maybe scanned on his laptop.
A photograph.
He had photographed before Celeste removed folder.
The page:
CARDINAL ORIGIN ADJUSTMENT
Charles residual participation after settlement:
12.5% economic.
No voting until Isabelle successor turns 30.
At Elena age 30:
Charles line receives either cash redemption at independent valuation or 8% converted noncontrolling interest.
So Nathan could be owed substantial money.
But not control.
Then why hide?
Likely tens of millions.
Then another line:
If Charles line suppressed or not notified, conversion becomes 12% and independent audit mandatory.
Penalty for concealment.
Celeste’s failure to notify Nathan made claim larger.
Her secrecy hurt family more.
Then Nathan laughed when told.
“My father would enjoy that.”
Maybe.
Then one more condition.
Charles line cannot receive funds if beneficiary participated in original unauthorized collateral conduct.
Nathan was a child then.
No problem.
Then my mother’s foundation.
Cardinal royalties diverted into fake shell reduced value.
Restitution would be needed.
Ashford owed money.
Nathan owed none.
Complex.
Then Daniel noticed one column on origin page:
MV OVERSIGHT.
Marcus Vale.
Fee:
0.5%.
Marcus had been involved from start.
He admitted.
Isabelle asked him to monitor royalty calculations when he was thirty four.
Did he receive fees?
Yes.
Foundation paid.
Disclosed.
Then:
“Did you know Charles had twelve point five?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know Nathan inherited?”
“I knew possibility.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because your mother instructed no disclosure until age thirty unless trigger event.”
“My surgery triggered event.”
“Yes.”
“When did you realize?”
“The morning after.”
Before banquet.
He had been holding information for days.
I felt anger.
“You still didn’t tell me.”
“You were six weeks from open heart surgery and Victor was trying to destroy Daniel. I prioritized stopping active harm.”
“Again, everyone decides what I can handle.”
Marcus accepted.
“You’re right.”
No excuse.
Then his role in buying Ashford debt.
Could knowing Cardinal rights benefit him?
No ownership.
Only management fees.
But conflict.
He offered independent review.
Good.
Then another document surfaced from Celeste’s burned papers.
A valuation request.
Cardinal portfolio.
Prepared four days before my surgery.
Client:
Celeste Ashford.
Why value before surgery?
Maybe estate planning.
Then requested scenario:
Elena dies before age thirty.
My chest tightened.
What happens?
Cardinal passes to:
Isabelle Foundation first.
Then a charitable remainder structure.
Not Celeste.
So my death did not make her rich.
Important.
Scenario two:
Elena incapacitated before age thirty.
Temporary protector:
Celeste, if independent.
That was the only route giving her control.
Not death.
Incapacity.
Then banquet assault by Victor could have risked my life, but that was his cruelty, not a rational Cardinal plan.
Celeste had even written:
Do not harm Elena.
Layered guilt.
Then one email from Celeste to Dr. Rusk:
How long after cardiac surgery can cognitive impairment be presumed?
Doctor:
It cannot be presumed.
Requires evaluation.
Celeste:
What if patient is heavily medicated?
Doctor:
Still not presumed.
She kept searching.
Then:
Could family request temporary financial conservatorship?
Doctor:
Speak to lawyer.
She did.
Arthur told her no basis.
Then Daniel intervened.
Then frame.
The financial conspiracy was about legal incapacity, not killing me.
That made Victor’s soup attack even more reckless.
Then Celeste asked through counsel to give a full statement.
She said:
“Victor did not know about the incapacity plan.”
Would I believe her?
Not without evidence.
Then she offered something.
The missing Cardinal origin file.
She knew where a second original existed.
My father’s private office safe.
The office had been sealed since his death.
Victor now used the building but not the old room.
We opened it under independent supervision.
Inside:
No origin file.
Only one note.
Richard’s handwriting.
IF CARDINAL EVER BECOMES A WEAPON BETWEEN MY CHILDREN, MARCUS KNOWS WHERE THE REAL ORIGINAL IS.
May you like
Everyone looked at Marcus.
Continue to the next part: Richard Ashford’s final note says Marcus knows where the true Cardinal origin document is hidden, forcing Elena to question how much her wealth manager has kept from her.
