Chapter 7 - What Celeste Knew About My Mother

Celeste never liked my mother.
She met my father two years after Isabelle died.
Yet she knew details she should not have known.
The foundation.
The patents.
The private desk.
Not the full value.
But enough.
Why?
Dad told her.
Marriage.
Estate planning.
Normal.
Then one old email changed that.
Richard to Celeste:
Isabelle foundation remains Elena’s independent inheritance. Never mix it with Ashford trust.
Celeste:
Understood.
Richard:
I mean it.
Then another:
If Ashford ever needs liquidity, do not use Elena’s patents.
Celeste:
I said I understand.
Dad had anticipated temptation.
Then after his death:
Celeste to Arthur Cross:
Can foundation royalty arrears be netted against Elena’s future trust distributions?
Arthur:
No without foundation approval.
Celeste:
What if Elena is beneficial owner of both?
Arthur:
Still separate legal structures.
She asked.
She knew.
Then fake Elena shell appeared a year later.
Not immediately.
Maybe she spent months looking for a way.
Then Victor’s role.
He proposed the lookalike entity.
Email:
Call it Foundation Holdings. Nobody reads suffixes.
That was his idea.
Celeste approved.
So both were involved.
Then Daniel’s frame.
Victor led.
Celeste enabled certificate renewal.
Was she comfortable arresting an innocent man?
Her lawyer said she believed Daniel had actually taken money after discovering the shell.
Maybe.
Emails did not support that fully.
One:
Victor:
Daniel is dirty enough to carry it.
Celeste:
Are you sure?
Victor:
Once certificate hits, nobody will care.
Celeste:
I care if it comes back.
That sounded like fear of exposure, not concern for innocence.
Then:
Do not involve me in the video.
Victor:
You won’t be.
So she knew evidence would be manufactured.
There.
Then Detective Hall informed prosecutors.
Daniel’s bail changed.
He was released under monitoring while the investigation continued.
Not exonerated.
But no longer behind bars.
I saw him the next morning.
He entered my hospital room slowly.
His face looked exhausted.
He saw the burns.
Stopped.
“What happened?”
“Victor.”
His jaw tightened.
“I’m going to kill him.”
“No.”
“Elena.”
“No.”
He laughed once without humor.
“Of course you’re the reasonable one after he boiled you.”
I reached for his hand.
He sat.
Then he looked at Marcus.
“Did you find Bellmere?”
“Yes.”
“E.L. shell?”
“Yes.”
“Zurich?”
“Yes.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“You moved faster than I did.”
Then he told us what he had not had time to explain before arrest.
He found another ledger.
Not Bellmere.
CARDINAL.
“What is Cardinal?”
A project code buried in Ashford Medical Ventures.
Payments labeled:
CARDINAL CLINICAL CONTINGENCY.
Amounts:
Small.
Regular.
Then larger after Dad’s death.
Total:
$67 million.
Marcus stared.
“I’ve never seen that.”
Daniel had only found fragments.
Then his arrest.
Where did Cardinal go?
The same Zurich bank family.
But different account.
Beneficial owner hidden behind a Liechtenstein foundation.
Then one name appeared in internal metadata:
I. LAURENT.
My mother.
Impossible.
She had been dead for fourteen years.
Could be legacy account.
Could be reused identity.
Could be a legitimate structure she created while alive.
Evidence first.
Then Celeste’s reaction.
When police asked about Cardinal, she refused to answer beyond counsel.
Victor said he had never heard of it.
But one email from him to Celeste contained:
Cardinal cannot surface with Daniel audit.
So he knew the word.
Maybe not full structure.
Then Marcus searched my mother’s foundation archive.
One folder:
CARDINAL.
Empty.
Index note:
Transferred to R.A. private custody.
R.A.
Richard Ashford.
My father.
He took the file.
Why?
Then Daniel said:
“There’s something else.”
The fake footage of him entering trust headquarters came from a camera archive that had been accessed by one administrator.
User:
MVALE.
Marcus froze.
“That is my old Ashford credential.”
“You had one?”
“Twelve years ago.”
He served briefly on Ashford Medical Ventures advisory board.
Credential should have been deleted.
It was not.
Someone used Marcus’s dormant account to export Daniel’s old footage.
May you like
Now the framing touched him too.
Continue to the next part: The same person framing Daniel used Marcus’s long dormant administrator account, and the access log points to a device inside Elena’s mother’s foundation office.
