Chapter 24 - Brian Became a Father

At forty-six, Brian had a son with a woman named Laura.

They had married quietly year before.

Laura was a physical therapist.

She knew entire story before wedding.

Brian told her.

Not from internet.

From himself.

That mattered.

Their son:

Matthew.

When Brian called:

“Dad, you’re a grandpa.”

I sat on porch and cried.

Not because grandchild erased past.

Because future had arrived without permission.

I asked:

“Everyone healthy?”

“Yes.”

“Laura?”

“Good.”

“Baby?”

“Loud.”

“Good.”

Then Brian said:

“I need to ask something.”

“What?”

“Will you meet him?”

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

Matthew did not spray me with hose.

He inherited nothing yet except a father who had a chance to parent differently.

I met him at two weeks.

Brian watched me hold baby.

His eyes filled.

“Dad.”

“What?”

“I’m scared.”

“Of what?”

“Being you.”

I laughed.

“That’s rude.”

“No, I mean giving too much. Making him entitled.”

I understood.

“Then don’t make sacrifice invisible.”

“What?”

“Marie and I acted like everything was easy so you’d feel safe. Maybe that was mistake.”

He listened.

“Tell him what things cost. Not to make guilty. To make grateful.”

Brian nodded.

“And never promise him a house to prove love.”

He laughed through tears.

“Deal.”
