Chapter 21 - Forgiveness Was Not Moving Backward

Brian asked:

“Do you forgive me?”

I said:

“No.”

His face fell.

Then I added:

“Not today.”

“What would it take?”

“I don’t know.”

“Therapy?”

“For you, maybe.”

“Money?”

“No.”

“Time?”

“Maybe.”

“I want my dad back.”

That sentence hurt.

“You had me.”

He closed eyes.

“I know.”

I did not hug him when he left.

But I told him he could call once a month.

Boundaries.

First call lasted six minutes.

Weather.

Work.

Nothing.

Second:

He told me he had started therapy.

Third:

He asked about plant scholarship trust after hearing from cousin? I had not publicized. Maybe no. Better he asked about Marie’s anniversary.

We met for coffee after six months.

No money discussion.

At one year, dinner.

I learned not all reconciliation requires restoration.

He never got key to my house.

Never became POA again.

Never became sole heir again.

Trust did not equal access.

Love did not require pretending risk disappeared.

Brian slowly learned.
