Chapter 9 - Monday’s Deadline

Banco Metropolitano’s letter to Roberto was dated Tuesday before wedding.

Cure deficiencies by Monday 10:00 a.m.

Required:

Original guarantor confirmation.

Updated financial disclosures.

Or replacement collateral.

The deficiency came from internal audit.

A bank compliance officer noticed my supposed guarantee used an email account created weeks before signing and no independent call.

They requested re-verification.

Roberto panicked.

If guarantee invalid, his company still owed loan.

But bank would reduce credit line.

That could trigger defaults with two other lenders.

Not because I withdrew money.

Because business was overleveraged.

Then Hernández Equipos y Servicios finances.

Independent accountant appointed by company board? It was family-owned. Roberto held 70 percent, Patricia 10, outside investor 20. The investor, Carlos Mendoza, demanded review after police investigation.

The books showed:

Revenue still substantial.

But margins collapsed.

Receivables overdue.

Debt 31 million pesos.

Assets maybe 27m at forced sale, more going concern.

Company could survive if restructured.

The forged guarantees had extended life by about eighteen months.

Roberto told himself he saved jobs.

Maybe.

He also postponed reality.

Then messages with CFO, Arturo Salgado.

ARTURO:

We cannot use Valeria guarantee without current consent.

ROBERTO:

She consented.

ARTURO:

I need file.

ROBERTO:

Patricia has.

Arturo believed.

Later he discovered anomalies but did not report immediately.

Why?

Fear of losing job.

He eventually cooperated.

No charge because he had not created documents and had challenged.

Then Monday plan.

Roberto wanted me to sign ratification.

If I did, it would convert disputed forged guarantees into actual acknowledgment.

Would it be fully binding? Lawyers debated because induced under pressure and underlying fraud. But it would complicate.

Patricia planned emotional meeting Sunday after wedding.

The notary appointment Monday.

Was notary corrupt?

No.

They had booked normal notary without telling purpose.

Likely the notary would have asked direct questions, maybe stopped.

But Roberto intended.

Then Alejandro's proposed company loan.

Why Navarro Logística rather than Alejandro personally?

Roberto assumed company had cash.

It did.

But corporate funds were not Alejandro's personal wallet.

He could not simply loan 12.8m without governance.

That irritated him when he saw draft.

“They don’t even understand how my company works.”

I laughed.

First genuine laugh since hospital.

Then:

“I'm glad fraud offended you administratively.”

“Deeply.”

Then lender deadline passed.

What happened?

Banco Metropolitano suspended new credit.

Did not instantly seize.

Company entered negotiated restructuring.

Carlos Mendoza forced Roberto to step aside temporarily under shareholder agreement.

An interim manager came.

Payroll continued.

No forty-two workers thrown into street Monday.

That destroyed another family threat.

Patricia had said:

“If you don't sign, families lose jobs.”

No.

There were options.

Restructure.

Sell assets.

Inject legitimate capital from shareholders.

Negotiate.

Hard.

Not apocalypse.

Then Roberto blamed me.

From attorney letter:

Valeria’s refusal to honor family obligations caused severe business damage.

Adriana responded:

Valeria never assumed obligations.

Do not contact.

Then civil suit threat.

Roberto could sue to enforce guarantees.

Lenders, not him, held.

He had no basis.

Still he threatened.

Then one lender voluntarily removed my guarantee after forensic evidence.

The equipment lease.

They admitted failure.

Another resisted pending police.

Banco Metropolitano froze enforcement against me.

The SUV finance company removed adverse reporting provisionally.

Slow.

Then credit score.

Damaged.

Not destroyed.

I spent hours.

Forms.

Identity theft reports.

Affidavits.

Copies.

That angered me more than dramatic confrontation sometimes.

Someone else signs.

You spend months proving absence.

Then wedding.

We remained legally married.

Civil record completed before incident.

My new surname? I had chosen socially maybe Valeria Hernández Navarro, but legally in Mexico women don't typically change surname. Prompt used Valeria. Fine. We'll keep Valeria Hernández, wife of Alejandro Navarro. Earlier document says Valeria Hernández Navarro, maybe as married styling. We can later note I had not legally changed name. Let's repair:

The finance folder listed "Valeria Hernández Navarro" even though my legal surname remained Hernández. That was another anomaly. Great.

I told Adriana:

“My legal name is still Valeria Hernández.”

She looked at contract.

“They added Navarro.”

The contract dated before wedding.

Before I was Mrs Navarro in any social sense.

How did they know future surname?

Maybe Patricia prepared update? Wait contract nine months earlier, couldn't say Navarro. We earlier wrote exactly. Inconsistency. Need fix in story narrative: Let's say the finance contract listed Valeria Hernández only. The hospital folder page maybe had header "Valeria Hernández Navarro" as Patricia's cover sheet, not original. Too late in previous chapters. We can clarify:

"The hospital cover sheet used Valeria Hernández Navarro, but the actual finance contract beneath listed Valeria Hernández." Fine.

Then Monday 10 passed.

No ratification.

No Alejandro money.

The world did not end.

That was important.

Then at 10:06, Roberto sent Patricia:

It’s over.

Patricia:

May you like

No. We can still make Vale fix.

That message was their entire worldview.
