Chapter 17 - The Company That Survived Roberto

Hernández Equipos y Servicios did not die.

That surprised Roberto most.

He had treated himself as company.

He wasn't.

Carlos Mendoza and senior managers developed restructuring plan.

Sell unused warehouse outside Toluca.

Close unprofitable hotel-installation division.

Focus on service contracts and refrigeration maintenance.

Debt reduced.

New investors bought 55 percent.

Roberto’s stake diluted/sold partly to satisfy creditors and restitution.

Patricia’s 10 percent included in marital property later.

Thirty-five employees remained.

Seven lost jobs across restructuring with severance.

Pain.

Not catastrophe.

Then company name became HES Servicios Industriales.

Not to erase family.

Because lenders wanted governance break.

Outside board.

No family member management for five years.

Then Arturo Salgado, former CFO, resigned.

He admitted he should have insisted on direct verification.

No criminal charge.

He helped transition.

Then lenders.

Actual losses:

Some credit repaid through operations.

Some collateral sale.

Some written down.

Roberto did not steal 9m into pocket.

He fraudulently obtained credit company could not fully repay.

That is still serious.

Then indemnity.

HES paid my documented professional costs over two years.

My credit restored.

All negative entries linked fraudulent guarantees removed.

I checked one final report.

Clean.

Then I stopped checking weekly.

Eventually.

Then Alejandro asked:

“Want to celebrate?”

“With what?”

“Dinner.”

“Because credit bureau says I exist?”

“Yes.”

We went tacos.

Not luxury.

I loved.

Then Fernanda’s debt.

Her old SUV sale left deficiency.

She could not pay in custody.

The lender entered civil claim against her, later settled after release through payment plan.

No Alejandro.

No me.

She lost several sponsored contracts due criminal publicity.

After prison, she would need normal job.

That was consequence.

Then Patricia’s finances.

She and Roberto separated legally.

Not immediately divorce.

During custody, she filed.

Why?

She wrote:

“Because I spent marriage confusing agreement with safety.”

But unlike Beatrice, Roberto did not physically abuse Patricia? We have no evidence. Could still be domineering financially/emotionally. Patricia was participant not coerced. We shouldn't retrofit victim story. Let's keep:

She filed because trust destroyed and she no longer wanted marriage, not claiming abuse.

She admitted she had actively supported Roberto.

Good.

Divorce split remaining lawful assets after creditor/restitution.

Then Roberto blamed.

From prison pre-sentencing detention? He was held after conviction perhaps.

He wrote her:

You turned daughters against me.

She responded through lawyer:

Our choices did.

That was progress.

Then family home.

Sold during divorce.

I felt nothing.

My childhood bedroom.

Not sacred.

Then Grandma Consuelo’s old education records.

I found a letter she wrote:

Valeria, education is the one thing nobody can spend for you.

Irony.

Parents had tried to spend name, not education.

I kept.

Then Miguel, uncle, invited me to family Christmas.

I declined first year.

Second year, yes.

No Patricia/Roberto/Fernanda due conditions.

It felt strange.

Some relatives apologized.

One aunt said:

“We should have asked questions when your mother kept calling you selfish.”

I said:

“Maybe.”

No group confession needed.

Then a cousin asked about Alejandro’s company.

I laughed.

“Don't.”

Everyone laughed nervously.

Good.

Then anniversary.

One year after wedding, we did not return Valle de Bravo.

We went to a small restaurant in Roma Norte.

Alejandro brought no flowers because almond scent? not related. He brought a book.

I gave him watch? maybe simple.

We toasted.

“To noon.”

Why noon?

Civil ceremony.

Before everything.

He smiled.

“To noon.”

Then he asked:

“Do you ever wish we had public ceremony?”

“Sometimes.”

“We can.”

“Not yet.”

“Okay.”

No rush.

Then prosecutor called.

Roberto’s sentencing date.

Loss calculations done.

He faced combined sentence that would keep him incarcerated longer than Patricia or Fernanda.

May you like

I had to decide whether to speak.

I did.
