Chapter 8 - CPS Asked Me the Question I Was Afraid Of
Child Protective Services visited our home four days after rescue.
Andrew and I had already returned from my parents’ house to ours.
Mia refused to sleep alone.
For the first week, we put a mattress beside our bed.
Not permanent.
Not a battle.
Caseworker Dana Price sat at our dining table.
“Paula, I need to ask something that may feel accusatory.”
“Okay.”
“You knew your parents favored your sister’s children.”
“Yes.”
“You still left Mia there for a week.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Because I wanted someone to tell me I had not failed.
Instead I said:
“I thought favoritism meant extra gifts and attention. I did not think they would abandon her.”
“Had they ever left her unsupervised before?”
“No.”
“Any physical discipline?”
“No.”
“Any unsafe behavior?”
“No.”
“Substance abuse?”
“No.”
“Cognitive issues?”
“No.”
“Did Mia express fear about going?”
“No. She was excited.”
“Did you check in?”
“First night. She sounded happy.”
Dana nodded.
“That matters.”
I asked:
“Am I responsible?”
She did not give me comforting lie.
“You are responsible for choosing caregivers. You made a choice based on a history that did not indicate this level of danger. Once you learned danger, you acted immediately. Our job is assess whether Mia is safe with you now.”
“Is she?”
“From what we see, yes.”
That was better than absolution.
I could learn without turning hindsight into proof I should have predicted impossible.
Dana interviewed Mia with child specialist.
Mia said:
Grandma told her not to leave.
She could use bathroom.
Food was available.
She had juice boxes.
She knew 911 but was afraid calling would make Grandma angry.
That last one stayed with me.
We practiced afterward.
“What happens if you call 911 because you’re scared?”
“Police come.”
“Do you get in trouble?”
“No.”
“Even if an adult says not to?”
“No.”
She repeated until she believed.
CPS closed our household assessment after safety planning.
The investigation concerning grandparents continued with law enforcement.
No custody threat.
