Chapter 18 - We Sold the House

I kept my parents’ house for eleven months after they moved.
At first I thought I might rent it.
Then maybe give it to Mia someday.
Andrew asked:
“Does she need a house tied to this?”
No.
I listed.
The market had risen.
After remaining mortgage, selling costs, and taxes, my net proceeds were around two hundred forty thousand dollars.
Some relatives said I profited from my parents.
That ignored six years of payments, repairs, taxes, insurance, cash down payment.
Financially, my return was ordinary.
Emotionally, enormous.
I did not give sale proceeds to Mom and Dad.
They had sold property years earlier and received their equity.
I also did not create revenge trust for Mia.
I invested part into our family portfolio and added fifty thousand dollars to Mia’s education account.
Not because grandparents owed her.
Because I wanted one positive decision to come from closing.
The new buyers were a nurse and an elementary-school teacher with a toddler.
At closing, I handed keys to title agent.
No ceremony.
The childhood house stopped belonging to our family.

That was okay.
History does not require ownership.
