Chapter 6 - The Truck Was Not Full

The next evidence came from the vacation photographs.

My mother’s excuse had been simple.

Mia didn’t fit.

Logan.

Sophie.

Marissa.

Her husband Nick.

Mom.

Dad.

Luggage.

Coolers.

Beach gear.

No space.

The vehicle was Dad’s Chevrolet Suburban.

Eight seats.

Driver.

Front passenger.

Two captain’s chairs in middle.

Three-seat third row.

Seven people were traveling.

That still left one seat.

Even before rearranging luggage.

At first I thought maybe gear occupied it.

Then Deputy Ramirez showed me the exterior security footage from a gas station obtained during investigation.

The third-row middle seat was clearly empty.

A beach bag sat on it.

Not bolted equipment.

Not cooler.

A canvas bag.

They had space.

The sentence had never been literal.

She didn’t fit meant:

We did not want her enough to make room.

That hurt more.

Then police extracted family group texts after Mom voluntarily showed messages selectively? Eventually subpoena if criminal case. The most relevant conversation had occurred Sunday night.

MARISSA:

Are we still taking all 3 tomorrow? Logan says Mia cries on long drives.

MOM:

I’m thinking of leaving Mia. She’s easy and Paula won’t know until we’re already there.

MARISSA:

With who?

MOM:

Neighbor can check.

MARISSA:

Did you ask her?

MOM:

I’ll handle it.

MARISSA:

Fine. Just don’t make this my problem if Paula loses it.

Dad was included in group.

No response.

Later:

DAD:

Mia doesn’t want to stay.

MOM:

She’ll survive. Stop making everything hard.

DAD:

Paula will be angry.

MOM:

Paula always gets over things.

That sentence.

Paula always gets over things.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

That was the family operating system.

I adjusted.

I paid.

I forgave.

I did not create scenes.

I worked.

I solved.

My mother had counted on my personality as part of her child-care plan.

Not because she believed leaving Mia was safe.

Because she believed consequences would be temporary.

I would be angry.

Then useful again.

That assumption died before they reached the coast.
