Chapter 23 - Evelyn Was the One Who Came

Great-Grandma Evelyn became eighty-five before her health slowed.
Mia was fifteen.
They remained close.
Every June, Evelyn joked:
“Charge your watch.”
Mia groaned.
“Great-Grandma.”
“Too soon?”
“Nine years.”
“Still too soon?”
“Yes.”
They laughed.
One afternoon Evelyn gave Mia the original moon light.
We had replaced it years earlier.
She had kept old one after bulb failed.
“Why?”
“Because it was glowing when I found you.”
Mia turned it in hands.
“Did you get scared?”
Evelyn smiled.
“Terrified.”
“You looked mad.”
“I was both.”
“Did Mom tell you to call police?”
“Yes.”
“Would you have anyway?”
“Absolutely.”
Mia looked at me.
“Good team.”
Evelyn died peacefully at eighty-eight, with family around her.
No tragedy.
No hidden secret.
At funeral, Mia placed no moon lamp in casket.
May you like
She kept it.
That felt right.
