Chapter 21 - Noah Says No

Noah was seventeen when Mom asked him to spend summer week in Ohio.

He said no.

Directly.

Not through me.

Mom said:

“Okay.”

Then called me afterward.

“I wanted to say he’s hurting my feelings.”

“But?”

“I didn’t.”

“Good.”

“I’m telling you instead.”

I laughed.

“That’s still triangulating.”

“Oh.”

She paused.

“Damn.”

We laughed.

Then she texted Noah later:

I’ll miss you. Have a good summer.

He showed me.

“That’s better.”

“Yes.”

He went camping with friends.

Freedom.

Lily, thirteen, chose week with Grandma.

Her choice.

Different.

Mom took Lily shopping.

She asked budget from me.

I said:

“Your gift budget is your choice, but don’t use gifts to pressure.”

Mom:

“I know.”

Lily came home with sneakers and books.

No debt.

Then Noah said:

“Grandma treats Lily better now.”

“Yes.”

“Because of Thanksgiving?”

“Because she changed after.”

He nodded.

Then:

“I’m glad you left.”

I looked.

“Still?”

“Yeah.”

“If I hadn’t canceled lodge?”

“Leaving house was enough.”

That surprised.

Money was adult drama.

For him, turning point was car door closing.
