Chapter 19 - The Lodge We Finally Used

Five years after canceled Thanksgiving, Hocking Ridge Lodge emailed a winter promotion.

I laughed.

Forwarded to Amanda:

Absolutely not.

She replied:

Coward.

Then Lily, ten, saw pictures.

“Can we go?”

I stared.

That place belonged to story, not trauma exactly.

No one had hurt us there.

We had never even checked in.

Why should family claim?

I asked Noah, fourteen.

“Would you want?”

“With who?”

“Us. Maybe Evan and Jenna. Maybe Amanda if invited.”

“No Grandma?”

“Could invite if we choose.”

He thought.

“Okay.”

We booked a smaller cabin at same resort.

Not eleven bedrooms.

Three.

I paid ours.

Amanda booked hers separately nearby.

Mom chose hotel room.

No master folio.

No shared cards.

We met for dinner.

Eric Donnelly still manager.

He recognized name when I checked.

“Claire Harper?”

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“Thanksgiving.”

I laughed.

“Unfortunately.”

He said:

“We updated guest authorization policy because of your reservation.”

“What?”

“Primary guests now approve financial changes through one-time verification link.”

I stared.

“Our family drama became software feature?”

“Basically.”

That delighted me.

Then he comped hot chocolate for kids.

Not room.

No inappropriate business forgiveness.

We stayed.

Lily had bed.

No floor.

Mom stayed at hotel by choice and drove over.

At dinner she said:

“This is nice.”

I raised eyebrow.

She laughed.

“I’m not touching room assignments.”

Then we took family photo.

No hired photographer.

Eric offered.

Twenty seconds.

Everyone fit.

When I looked later, what struck me:

No one standing behind me smirking.

Just people.

May you like

Imperfect.

Changed.
