Chapter 17 - Diane’s Seventieth

Mom turned seventy.

Amanda proposed surprise weekend.

I laughed.

“No surprise group lodging.”

Amanda:

“Fair.”

We planned restaurant lunch.

Everyone paid own travel.

Amanda reserved private room with clear per-person cost.

Mom knew.

No surprise because she hated.

Then a week before, Mom called.

“I want to pay for everyone.”

I tensed.

“Why?”

“Birthday gift to myself.”

“Can you afford?”

“Yes.”

“Do you expect anything?”

“No.”

“Then okay.”

She paid restaurant directly.

Not through me.

After lunch, she stood.

“I have something to say.”

I immediately wanted disappear.

Mom ignored.

“I used to think family meant the people who loved you should automatically understand what you meant.”

She looked at me.

“That is very convenient when what you mean benefits you.”

Amanda laughed softly.

Mom continued.

“I also thought the child who needed help deserved more of me.”

Then:

“I didn’t see what that taught my grandchildren.”

She looked at Noah and Lily.

“I am sorry.”

No dramatic applause.

Aunt Rachel cried.

Mom:

“And for record, Claire did not ruin Thanksgiving.”

Everyone laughed.

Then:

“I did.”

I looked at her.

Amanda raised hand.

“Co-signed.”

More laughter.

That was enough.

No public humiliation.

She owned.

Then after party, Mom gave me Dad’s watch.

Not because I was responsible one.

She said:

“Amanda got his camera. You get watch.”

Equal? Not necessary.

Chosen.

I wore.

Then Mom said:

“I used to think you did not need anything.”

“What changed?”

May you like

“You told me.”

It should always have been that simple.
