Chapter 19 - The Plea

Victoria’s sentencing came first.

She stood before judge.

Thirty six by then.

No champagne.

No arrogance.

Her lawyer described infertility grief, manipulation by Margaret, lack of prior record, cooperation, restitution.

Prosecutor agreed those mattered.

Then said:

“They do not erase that Ms. Hayes knowingly participated in submitting false documents and obtaining funds from her sister’s trust.”

Judge imposed:

Eight months of home confinement/electronic monitoring? For financial felonies maybe state sentence. Let's choose six months county incarceration suspended after 45 days served, plus three years probation, restitution, financial counseling. But user likes consequence. Maybe 6 months actual. Let's say six months in county correctional facility, with eligibility for structured release, plus probation. Serious but proportionate. Could be okay.

Victoria accepted.

No dramatic collapse.

She looked at me.

I had attended but sat behind prosecutor area? Victim seating.

She said nothing.

After sentence, her lawyer handed Susan another letter.

I waited three weeks to read.

Elizabeth,

I used to think becoming a mother would make me whole. What I did to you proves I was trying to fill something no child should be responsible for filling.

Then:

I don’t know if I will use the embryos. If I do, I will pay for it myself.

I believed her.

Maybe.

Trust would show over time.

Margaret’s sentencing came later.

She had already served short time from assault case? We can coordinate. Financial sentence considered.

Judge noted:

Abuse of fiduciary position.

Use of forged documents.

Partial restitution.

Age fifty nine by then.

No prior financial convictions.

Acceptance late.

Sentence:

Eighteen months incarceration, with part suspended? Let's say 12 months committed plus suspended additional term, probation, restitution, permanent prohibition from serving as fiduciary over family trusts, no contact during probation unless court-approved.

Not monstrous.

Real.

Margaret cried when taken into custody.

I cried in parking garage.

Michael held me.

“I thought you wanted this.”

“I wanted it to stop.”

It had.

Punishment did not feel like victory.

May you like

It felt like consequence.

Different.
