Chapter 18 - The Courtroom

Final trust judgment came six months after Grace’s birth.
Judge ordered:
Margaret permanently removed as trustee.
Independent professional trustee appointed until I turned thirty five, then I could choose control subject to terms.
Margaret surcharged for unauthorized distributions and investment losses attributable to self dealing.
Victoria jointly responsible for defined portion she knowingly solicited/received through false documentation.
North Shore settlement credited.
Blue Harbor refunds credited.
Hayes Family Ventures interest transferred.
Condo proceeds escrowed partly.
Total restored/ordered recovery:
Approximately $287,000 immediately or through scheduled payments, with remaining losses accounted under settlements and market adjustment.
Why not full $312,480?
Some amounts legally complicated.
Some services had mixed beneficiary purposes.
Some recovery costs.
Settlement certainty.
I accepted.
The trust balance after restoration and investment recovery rose to around $486,000.
Not what it might have been without withdrawals.
But close enough to Dad’s purpose that I could breathe.
Susan asked:
“Do you want to assume control at thirty five?”
“Yes.”
“Immediately?”
“Probably use independent advisor.”
Good.
I had learned something.
Control does not mean doing everything yourself.
It means choosing who has authority.
Margaret’s no-contact order with me remained through probation.
She could request modification later.
I could oppose.
Victoria’s contact stayed voluntarily absent.
No court order except financial/criminal conditions.
Then one matter remained.
Dad’s watch.
Victoria still had it.
She had kept it since he died.
One afternoon a package arrived through Susan.
Inside:
Robert’s watch.
Ticking.
A note.
You let me keep this because I said it helped me sleep. I used to think that meant you could survive without Dad better than I could. Now I understand you were being kind. I’m giving it back because I turned your kindness into proof you needed less.
I sat on kitchen floor and cried.
Michael found me.
No words.
He sat.
Grace asleep upstairs.
The watch ticked.
I did not send it back.
I put it in a drawer.
Not display.
May you like
Not shrine.
Mine.
