Jason’s cooperation did not make him sympathetic.

Julian believed he had.
Reed believed Julian never sent.
One corrupt link created four years of silence.
Then Ellison admitted Helen paid him directly once.
He told her a civilian source existed.
No name.
She inferred Julian.
She paid again after hospice to ask whether source file would stay open.
Ellison said:
“Probably not.”
She relaxed.
Then Julian’s old letter arrived.
She realized he had left backup.
REDLINE RETRIEVAL.
Money.
Search.
Car.
Everything.
Then I asked Reed:
“Do you blame yourself?”
He thought.
“Yes.”
“For Ellison?”
“For assuming a failed delivery meant Julian changed his mind.”
“Could you have known?”
“Maybe not.”
“Then why blame?”
“Because leadership means reviewing failures even when someone else caused them.”
I liked that answer.
Then internal Army investigation cleared Reed of misconduct in the leak but recommended archive controls changes.
No perfect commanders.
Systems learn.
Then local family issue.
Edward was charged with obstruction-related conduct? His lawyer negotiated.
Given age? Edward maybe 62. He entered plea for falsifying corporate records and concealing evidence, received probation/home confinement, fines, cooperation. No prison maybe. That feels reasonable.
Valerie faced federal conspiracy? Because knowingly false manifests. She cooperated. Sentence perhaps 10 months home confinement and probation, community service, loss of business role. But seriousness export control could be more. Yet young, coerced, current false signature. Let's make 14 months federal custody? That would impact Dylan.
