Chapter 11 - My Mother’s Choice

Helen’s attorney objected to Jason’s characterization.
Of course.
Money records did not care.
The first payment to Helen came after Desert Mesa.
$18,000.
Maybe hush money.
Second:
$25,000.
Then $40,000.
Then consulting retainers.
Over eight years:
More than $1.1 million.
She used some to support Valerie.
Some to cover Monroe Freight losses.
Some to buy herself:
Jewelry.
Travel.
A Scottsdale condo share nobody knew about.
Greed.
Not all sacrifice.
Then Helen’s texts with Jason.
Years earlier:
JASON:
Sloane wants another lane.
HELEN:
Double the fee.
JASON:
Valerie is nervous.
HELEN:
Valerie will do what she is told.
My mother had become coordinator.
Not top.
Not victim.
Participant.
Then after Julian got sick:
HELEN:
How much does he know?
Jason:
Enough.
HELEN:
Can treatment make him unreliable?
Jason:
What?
HELEN:
If anyone asks later.
She was already planning discredit.
That explained years of saying Julian’s medications confused him.
Then after his death:
HELEN:
Letter came.
Jason:
Photo.
Helen:
Sending.
Jason:
Find Redline.
Helen:
Working on it.
There.
The toy.
Then:
HELEN:
Edward won’t throw the car away.
Jason:
Take it back.
Helen:
Too risky. He thinks it’s sentimental.
So she left it.
Assumed useless.
That mistake preserved key.
Then I asked Reed:
“Did she know Julian was the source?”
“Not definitively.”
“She suspected.”
“Yes.”
“Did she ever threaten him?”
“No evidence.”
“Did Sloane?”
“Indirect messages. Nothing specific enough.”
No need for false murder plot.
Cancer took Julian.
They merely waited for it to silence him.
That was cruel enough.
Then child assault case.
Local prosecutors had clear video and witness statements.
Helen’s lawyer offered plea to misdemeanor assault?
Because injury minor but victim child. Could be treated seriously.
But federal charges now dwarfed it.
Conspiracy.
Export control violations.
Obstruction.
Payment to government insider.
Evidence tampering.
The local slap became small legally.
Not small to me.
I requested protective order for Matthew.
Granted.
Helen could not contact him.
Then Valerie.
Her situation more complicated.
She had knowingly signed false manifests years ago.
Accepted money.
Signed current charity shipment without verification after suspecting.
But she cooperated early.
Did not organize network.
She faced charges.
Her attorney negotiated.
She would have consequences.
Edward too.
Then my father asked to meet again.
He brought a folder.
No hidden trick.
Company records.
“I want to give everything.”
“Why now?”
“Because I finally understand silence isn’t neutral.”
I stared.
He continued:
“I signed one false incident report after Desert Mesa.”
My stomach tightened.
“You what?”
“Helen told me Valerie would be prosecuted for an honest mistake.”
“So you falsified?”
“Yes.”
“That report kept investigators from seeing the original routing error.”
“Yes.”
“You helped start the cover-up.”
He cried.
“Yes.”
Then:
“I never took Northstar money.”
Records supported.
“But I protected Helen after I knew enough to stop.”
Yes.
He would cooperate and accept whatever followed.
Then Edward handed me one small black USB drive.
I stopped breathing.
“Julian gave this to me.”
“You said Helen took it.”
“She took one.”
“What?”
“There were two.”
My hands shook.
“Why did you keep this?”
“Because I was a coward.”
Not noble.
Not strategy.
Fear.
“I hid it in my office wall.”
“What’s on it?”
“I never opened it.”
Written in Julian’s handwriting:
FOR CLARA. NOT EVIDENCE.
My heart stopped.
May you like
This one was not for the government.
It was for me.
