Chapter 10 - The Shipment Julian Tried to Stop

Julian’s files reconstructed the old scheme.

No mystery left in the mechanics.

Graybridge manufactured secure processors used in military medical and logistics systems.

Sloane diverted small quantities into gray market sales.

Not enough to empty warehouses.

Enough to make millions.

He needed shipments to pass through civilian carriers.

Monroe Freight provided that route.

Valerie’s initial mistake gave Sloane leverage.

Helen chose concealment.

Edward eventually suspected.

Jason managed.

Ellison leaked inspection information.

Julian found invoice discrepancies.

Then cancer arrived.

Indifferent to all of it.

He still kept working.

Reed showed me a source meeting note.

JULIAN HALE:

If I stop because I’m sick, they will assume illness solved their problem.

Reed:

Your health comes first.

Julian:

My son does.

That line broke me.

“What did he mean?”

Reed looked at me.

“He believed the network had started looking into your family. He wanted it closed before Matthew became old enough to be used as leverage.”

They used him anyway.

Not physically in the old scheme.

But Helen searched his toy.

Years later slapped him over the same symbol.

Then source notes.

Julian had planned to testify if enough corroboration emerged.

It did not.

Ellison’s leak destroyed operation.

Sloane shut down diversion.

Jason left Graybridge.

Northstar formed later.

Case went dormant.

Julian died.

Sloane waited.

Then rebuilt.

Why now?

Demand for the processors rose.

New buyer network.

Charity routes.

Old family vulnerabilities.

Helen still wanted money.

Jason still controlled Valerie.

Voss supplied current access.

A dormant crime became active.

Then one more fact.

The current shipment had been scheduled to leave the morning after my mother slapped Matthew.

That was why the newly classified packet arrived yesterday.

The government had already identified overlap between Northstar and Julian’s old source file.

My family gathering collided with a case already moving.

Helen did not know Commander Reed would arrive.

She only knew the red car might matter.

Then Sloane’s arrest.

Agents waited.

Used Jason’s phone under controlled monitoring.

Jason sent:

Problem solved. Captain blamed if needed.

Sloane replied:

Then move second load tonight.

There.

Second load.

Agents tracked.

Private airfield outside Tucson.

Sloane arrived personally.

Not because criminal masterminds always show themselves.

Because he no longer trusted anyone.

He was arrested near the hangar.

Inside vehicles:

Restricted components.

Cash.

False medical manifests.

No violence.

No cinematic gunfight.

Paper and greed were enough.

Then Reed called me.

“Primary network is contained.”

I exhaled.

National security side nearly done.

Family side remained.

Then Sloane requested lawyer and stopped talking.

Jason began cooperating.

His first full statement contained one sentence I was not ready for.

“Helen did not join because we threatened Valerie.”

I stared.

“What?”

Jason continued through investigators:

“She stayed because she liked getting paid.”

May you like

Fear started it.

Greed kept it.
